• The aerodynamically designed successor to the Chevy Astro, this generation of GM minivans is often referred to as the Dustbuster.
  • The Oldsmobile variant gained unexpected recognition in the 1995 film Get Shorty.
  • This car has only been in California and has very low mileage. The auction ends on Monday, February 3.

“I ordered a Cadillac.”

“Oh, well, you got the Cadillac of minivans.”

In Get Shorty, a funny comedy from the mid-1990s about a mafioso who breaks all the rules (and a few noses) as he romps through Hollywood, John Travolta’s character Chili Palmer ends up driving an Oldsmobile Silhouette. There are a lot of interesting characters in this movie, like Danny DeVito’s naive movie star or Dennis Farina’s great performance as a bad guy who chews the scenery.

The 1993 Oldsmobile Silhouette Minivan Is Today's Top Pick On Bring A Trailer

This 1993 Oldsmobile Silhouette in beautiful Medium Garnet is for sale at Bring a Trailer, a part of Hearst Autos. It includes Invoice Pricing. The car has only 69K miles on it, and it has lived in sunny California since it was new.

The Oldsmobile was one of three cars made by General Motors to compete with Chrysler’s dominance in the minivan market. It was also known as the Dustbuster van (because, well, look at it). After the Chevy Astro and GMC Safari didn’t live up to expectations, GM’s design department asked Pontiac to come up with a new idea.

Boy, they did it. The 1986 Chicago auto show was the first time the Trans Sport concept van was shown. It looked futuristic and had rear gullwing doors. The ship even had a Nintendo system built in. Of course, the version that was made was much more traditional.

As usual, GM sold the product under all of its brands, though the flavors of each version were a little different. The Chevy Lumina APV was the main vehicle on which everything ran. The more sporty choice was the Pontiac Trans Sport. The most expensive car on the lot was the Olds Silhouette.

Find the version that didn’t sell very well. Because so many were sold at fleet sales, you’d find a Silhouette on a rental lot. This is part of the joke in Get Shorty. Unlike the vans that were broken into and thrown away, this one has been owned by the same family since it was new and looks like it has been well taken care of.

Under the aerodynamic hood is a 3.8-liter V-6 engine that makes 170 hp and 225 lb-ft of torque. It passed emissions tests in California last year and has recently had some maintenance done, like having the water pump and serpentine belt replaced.
