2025 BMW 4 Overview

What’s new:

  • It is adding a light hybrid technology to the two engines that are already on the market.
  • New headlights and taillights.
  • With iDrive 8.5, the entertainment system has been improved.
  • Second-generation 4 Series released in 2021.

The 4 Series is the stylish coupe and convertible version of BMW’s popular 3 Series sedan. It has the same mix of fuel economy, practicality, and speed. The 4 Series Gran Coupe, which we’ll look at separately, has a front end that looks a lot like the coupe and convertible. But it’s not the same as the 3 Series; it has four doors and a top that curves more. BMW made a lot of changes to the 4 Series technology for 2025. The engines now have hybrid assistance, the infotainment system is state-of-the-art, and the front and back lights are all new.

In 2025, the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder 430i and the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six M440i will also be able to run on hybrid powertrains. The 4 Series’ electric motor helps the stop-start system and gives the car some extra torque as it speeds up, but it’s not enough to power the car by itself. The 430i’s 2.0-liter engine was completely reworked to make it more fuel-efficient, which usually means it has less power. The general output, however, stays the same from last year to this year at 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque thanks to the hybrid system. A less major overhaul was done to the M440i’s six-cylinder engine’s electrical parts, which increased output to 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft, which is a rise of 4 horsepower and 29 lb-ft.

Since small luxury coupes and convertibles are no longer made, the 4 Series doesn’t have many straight rivals. The Audi A5 and S5 are cheaper, have the same amount of power, and have less controversial bodywork, especially when equipped with all-wheel drive. The brand-new Mercedes-Benz CLE is meant to bring the market back to life, while the Lexus RC, which is almost ten years old, feels like it’s almost the end of its useful life.

Pros

  • Motors that are strong and save fuel.
  • You don’t have to give up sporty driving to ride comfortably.
  • The cargo area is surprisingly big.

Cons

  • When the hood is flat, it’s hard to line up the front of the car.
  • People who are too tall to fit in the standard sunroof can’t get this one.

How was the 4 Series put together? The M440i roadster with rear-wheel drive was put to the test. It took 4.6 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph in our tests, which is a full second faster than a similarly equipped 430i hatchback. The car is very strong. At highway speeds, acceleration is really cool.

Sadly, the brakes are grabby at low speeds, and you need to use a light foot to stop properly. When you are driving quickly, the steering can get hard to understand. Even though other cars aren’t much better in this area, it’s still a little disappointing in a BMW. One of the most impressive aspects of the 4 Series is its superior handling. It stays calm even in sharp turns, and the traction control doesn’t step in very often. This car is easy to drive because it has an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts easily and always seems to be in the right gear.

How does it feel to ride in the 4 Series? BMW makes some of the best front seats on the market. They are comfortable, and you can adjust the angle of the side support and the extension of your thighs.

The M440i has a very smooth ride thanks to its usual adaptive suspension. The tires and wind don’t make much noise either. The only real mistake is in the climate system. The three-zone system is helpful in a small convertible, but strangely, the automatic feature doesn’t change the fan speed. The sync feature is also hidden behind a choice on the touchscreen.

How is the state of the inside? BMW drivers know the 4 Series cabin, but others unfamiliar with BMW design may find it unsettling. Even though there are a lot of buttons, most of the settings are in the right place. The iDrive infotainment system’s settings are also hard to get used to because they are so complicated, but most of the features you use every day are just a few clicks away. Because the charging pad for smartphones is in front of the cupholders, no one can use their phone while having a drink.

There is enough space in the front seats, but the back seat could be more useful because it’s not very big. The convertible is better for taller drivers than the car because it doesn’t have a sunroof that takes up space in the front seat.

It needs to be clarified from the front. It’s hard to move the front of the car because the hood is flat, and the side view mirrors make it a little harder to see when you turn left. The convertible’s huge rear roof pillars make it even harder to see out the back.

What’s wrong with the tech? In our test car, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay made it easy to join our smartphones wirelessly. This feature is now standard. The four USB ports and the charging pad that can be purchased are always ready to be used for charging. The guidance system gives you Yelp reviews for places that aren’t homes, which makes it useful. The voice control system is very good at picking up spoken names and questions about points of interest. The Harman Kardon music system that comes with the 4 Series is also very good, making a sound that is full and surrounds you.

What’s going on with storage? The 4 Series convertible can hold up to 13.6 cubic feet of things in the trunk, which is a bit more than the Mercedes C-Class convertible and a bit more than the Audi A5 and S5 convertibles can hold. The BMW’s pass-through is a little small, but the back seats can be folded down to make more room for things. When you drop the top, you have to make a divider in the trunk, which limits the total storage space to 10.6 cubes. You can get to the whole trunk if you leave the top up.

The trunk space inside this convertible is big for its size. There are many boxes, cubbies, and other storage options for people in the back seats. If you want to buy a four-seater because you want to have kids, it should be easy to add a child seat. There isn’t much room, though, so an adult in the front seat will have to move forward to make room for a child seat in the back.

How much fuel does it use? According to the EPA, the 4 Series gets pretty good gas mileage for a high-end two-door car. In general, the EPA’s estimates are pretty accurate when we’re moving.

Does the 4 Series have a lot of value? The 4 Series convertible costs a lot of money. An M440i with some but only some of the bells and whistles was our test car. It cost a crazy $73,120. The prices start at just over $54,000. That’s a bit more than an Audi S5 convertible of the same type and about the same as a Mercedes-AMG C 43 convertible. However, expert sports cars like the Porsche 718 Boxster and Corvette Stingray convertible are much better when it comes to handling. For people who need a four-seater, the Ford Mustang GT is a much better deal with the same level of speed. Though the 4 Series is well-made, there are some areas inside that could be better for the price.

All three of these companies offer bumper-to-bumper warranties that last for four years and 50,000 miles. The warranty offered by the first three maintenance visits is free, which is nicer than its straight competitors.

There’s nothing bad about driving a 4 Series. Many drivers will be happy with how much speed the 430i has. On twisting roads, the 4 Series is fun to drive, even though the steering could be more precise than that of BMW’s best cars.

People have different tastes in style, but no one has ever been able to look at the front end of the 4 Series without grimacing. The bigger head, even though it’s ugly, gives the front of the 4 Series its look. The back looks a bit like other cars. The controversial look hides a capable, well-rounded sports car that is fun to drive, which is a shame.

The M440i is a great car. It has a throaty, thrilling exhaust sound and a lot of power. The extra common features make the price difference between it and the 430i smaller, but the 430i is still strong if you can’t spend the extra money.

Styles of the BMW 4 Series

There are four different models of the 2025 BMW 4 Series car and convertible. They are the 430i, the 430i xDrive, the M440i, and the M440i xDrive. The 430i has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that makes 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The M440i, on the other hand, has a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine and an electric motor that makes 386 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. There is only an automatic drive with eight speeds. On xDrive models, all-wheel drive is not normal but can be added as an option.
