Quick answer

Is dealer financing better than a bank or credit union?

It can be, but only after an apples-to-apples comparison. Obtain an outside preapproval, then let the dealer try to beat its APR, term, fees, amount financed, finance charge, and total of payments. A lower monthly payment is not automatically a better loan; it can come from a longer term, a larger down payment, or a different amount financed. Also determine whether taking promotional financing changes the rebate or selling price.

Before the dealership

Build leverage with an outside loan offer

A preapproval gives you a real price for money before the dealership controls both the vehicle negotiation and the financing conversation.

1 · Credit

Review your credit first

Check your reports for errors and know the score range a lender is likely to use. Rate shopping is more useful when the underlying information is accurate.

2 · Preapproval

Request at least one outside offer

Ask a bank or credit union for the approved amount, APR, term, expiration date, vehicle restrictions, down-payment requirement, and estimated payment.

3 · Vehicle

Negotiate the OTD price separately

Establish the complete purchase price before comparing loans. Use the out-the-door price guide to keep taxes, fees, add-ons, and incentives visible.

4 · Dealer

Invite the dealer to compete

Show the terms that must be beaten without surrendering control of the discussion. Ask for the dealer offer in writing with the same term and amount financed.

6 · Contract

Verify before signing

Confirm the final retail installment contract matches the offer you chose: creditor, APR, finance charge, amount financed, payment schedule, and total of payments.

Keep credit applications intentional

Ask who will receive your application and whether the dealership plans to submit it to multiple lenders. Do not sign a blank credit application or a contract with unfilled terms.

Three-offer comparison

Auto loan comparison worksheet

Write down the same vehicle price, trade credit, cash down, taxes, fees, and add-ons before recording the loan terms. If the amount financed differs, identify exactly why.

The winning offer

Circle the loan that preserves the best complete vehicle deal while meeting your cash-flow needs. Record why: lowest total cost, better flexibility, shorter term, lower required down payment, or another verified benefit.

Beyond monthly payment

Five numbers that reveal the real loan cost

The Truth in Lending disclosures are designed to make credit terms comparable. Read them together instead of choosing from the payment alone.

APR

Annual percentage rate

APR is the yearly cost of credit expressed as a percentage. It can differ from the simple interest rate because certain finance charges may be included.

Principal

Amount financed

This is the credit provided on your behalf. If it is higher than expected, recheck add-ons, negative equity, fees, taxes, and cash-down entries.

Cost

Finance charge

This is the dollar cost of consumer credit under the disclosed terms. It helps expose how a small rate or term change accumulates.

Schedule

Payment count and amount

Verify the number of payments, payment amount, first due date, and any unusual final payment. Do the schedule and contract match the quote?

Total

Total of payments

This shows what all scheduled payments add up to if the loan follows the contract. Compare it only after confirming the amount financed is comparable.

Flexibility

Prepayment and restrictions

Ask about prepayment penalties, automatic-payment requirements, membership rules, vehicle-age limits, lien procedures, and offer expiration.

Manufacturer offers

Compare promotional APR and cash-back as two complete transactions

A headline rate may be valuable, but the correct comparison includes every term that changes when you select it.

Eligibility matters

Promotional rates and rebates can depend on model, trim, region, lender, credit tier, purchase date, and other conditions. Do not compare advertised examples until the dealership confirms which offers apply to your exact VIN and transaction.

Before you sign

Reconcile the chosen offer with the finance contract

A strong quote is not enough. The contract is the final checkpoint, and every material number should match your chosen offer or have a documented explanation.

1. Match the exact creditor

Confirm the lender or assignee shown on the paperwork is the one connected to the terms you selected.

2. Rebuild the amount financed

Start with the final OTD price, subtract cash down and net trade credit, then add only the agreed financed items. Explain every difference.

3. Match APR, term, and payment schedule

Do not accept a longer term simply because it preserves a target payment. Confirm the number of payments and first due date.

5. Confirm incentive treatment

Verify that the selected rebate or promotional rate appears exactly as represented and that no selling-price concession disappeared.

6. Retain the complete signed package

Keep the credit application disclosures, itemized buyer’s order, retail installment contract, product agreements, and any cancellation instructions.

Stop if the deal becomes conditional

If you are told financing is still pending, do not assume the signed payment terms are final. Read every conditional-delivery document and use the spot-delivery checklist before taking the vehicle.

Common questions

Dealer, bank, and credit-union financing FAQs

Is dealer financing always more expensive than a bank or credit union?

No. A dealer may have access to competitive lender offers or manufacturer promotional financing. Compare written offers using the same amount financed and term.

Should I tell the dealer I already have a preapproval?

You can use the preapproval as a benchmark and invite the dealer to beat it. First establish the vehicle’s itemized out-the-door price so the financing discussion does not hide a price change.

What is the most important number when comparing auto loans?

APR is important, but it is not sufficient alone. Compare APR, amount financed, term, finance charge, total of payments, fees, conditions, and any vehicle incentive that changes.

Can a lower monthly payment cost more overall?

Yes. A longer loan term can reduce the payment while increasing the time interest accrues and the total amount paid.

Does applying with several auto lenders hurt my credit?

Credit-scoring treatment can depend on the model and timing. Shop within a focused period, ask whether an inquiry will be hard or soft, and verify current guidance with the lender or credit bureau.

Can the dealer require me to buy a warranty to get the quoted rate?

Ask whether any product is truly required by the lender and request that requirement in writing. Optional products should be identified and priced separately.

What if the contract has different loan terms than the quote?

Pause and request a written explanation and corrected paperwork. Do not sign based on a promise that the contract will be fixed later.
