2025 Chevy Trax Overview

What’s new:

  • Most will have stayed the same by 2025.
  • As part of the second version of Trax coming out in 2024.

The 2025 Trax is the starting level model for the brand because it’s the least expensive Chevy car. Because only a few other car companies make new cars that cost about the same as the Trax, it’s basically a way to get cheap wheels. This small crossover SUV proves that cheap doesn’t have to mean dull. Its three-cylinder turbo engine has enough low-end power to keep up with the speed of traffic, and its lightweight and small size make it easy to park in tight spaces and quick to control. It’s also pretty big inside. When it comes to price, features, and comfort, the Trax is a great deal for a small SUV.

You might be surprised by how much space there is inside the Trax, given how small it is. Both the comfort and the ride quality are good. The seats are comfy and stay that way even on long drives, and the suspension is flexible enough to smooth out most uneven and rough ground. The Trax comes with a lot of useful features, such as the ability to connect to Apple and Android devices, an 11-inch touchscreen on mid-level and higher trims, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, and driver assistance features like automatic high beams and lane-keeping assist. All of these are rare at this price point. With the optional Driver Confidence package, you can get two useful extras: blind-spot warning and adaptive speed control.

Since the Trax was revived last year (the last version was sold from 2015 to 2022), there will be no big changes in 2025. The well-rounded Volkswagen Taos and the sleek and quick Mazda CX-30 are two cars that compete with it. Both get high scores from Edmunds. Chevrolet actually makes a car that competes directly with the Trax, which is cool. The bigger Trailblazer costs a little more, but it has more powerful engines and available all-wheel drive, which the Trax doesn’t have. Both do some of the same things, so think about whether the Trailblazer is better for your needs.

Pros

  • It has a lot of benefits for the price.
  • The storage area and seats are big, even though they are small.
  • Accessible: The 11-inch tablet in the middle is big and easy to use.

Cons

  • Slower and slower speed up.
  • There is no way to get an all-wheel drive.

How does the Trax get its power? The three-cylinder engine in the Trax is made for modest acceleration. On the test track, though, our test car reached 60 mph from 0 mph in 9.1 seconds, which is about the same time as its rivals. Around town, the small engine has a lot of power, which makes it easy to keep up with traffic. As you drive along the highway, the motor starts to whine a little. The automatic shifter works easily and quickly when you need to downshift.

The driving and stopping power of a small crossover SUV are about average. It’s easy to park because the steering is light, and the brake pedal can be used for both emergency stops and smooth stops. While the Trax isn’t very sporty, it feels safe when you turn.

How does the Trax make you feel? Because they are pretty flat, the Trax’s seats don’t offer the best support when making turns. That being said, the padding is nice and useful. We drove a few hundred miles in the Trax in a short amount of time without any trouble after a long trip. People in the back seats should be able to relax. The Trax’s suspension smooths out most of the road’s bumps and holes, making the ride smooth.

Some wind and road noise can be heard on the highway, but it’s never too loud to shout or much louder than your competitors. The Trax’s main defense is its temperature system. If you often have people with you, the fact that it doesn’t have rear air vents or dual-zone climate control is a problem, even if it has enough power to keep you comfy.

How is the state of the inside? One of the best cabins you can find in an extra-small SUV is in the Trax. We like how the buttons on the dashboard and driving wheel are set up so that they are easy to use. You won’t have to look for anything ever again. The menus on the touchscreen are also well organized. However, the touchscreen often took a long time to answer when we tested it.

Everything is easy to see and get to when you’re moving. It’s very easy to get in and out because the doors open wide and the seats are high. It’s a good thing that both rows of seats can fit more people than almost any other car in its class. The back seat is big enough for all people, even the tallest ones, to fit, even on long trips. The upright windows, big mirrors, and clean-looking backup camera also make it easy to see.

What’s wrong with the tech? There is a lot of technology inside the Trax that is also in the newest version of General Motors cars. Some changes have been made just for this compact crossover, though. The biggest difference is that it doesn’t come with a voice command or navigation system. However, you can still easily control your phone with standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s not true that every car with wireless smartphone connectivity has problems. We had no problems with either the wired or wireless links.

Adaptive cruise control and blind spot warning are two of the Trax’s high-tech features. We found that the systems worked well and were simple to set up. The adaptive cruise control kept up with the traffic on the highway without letting you get too far ahead of the car in front of you.

What’s going on with storage? With a load capacity of 25.6 cubic feet, the Trax is bigger than almost all of its rivals in this class. This area can hold enough goods and materials for a few weeks because it is wide and deep. Because the back window is tilted, it may be hard to install taller things. This is the case for most cars in this class. You can only find a little space behind the seats for this price.

A big mistake is that there are no cupholders in the back seats. Other than that, there is enough storage space inside. Most of their rivals have a place for a backseat passenger to put their coffee, so this is a big mistake. There are slots in the doors for a water or drink bottle, and a small space for a phone is between the big cupholders in the front. Other small things can be stored in the bins on the front and back of the shifter, as well as the large console in the middle. There are many places to keep your phone, sunglasses, and other things.

Even though the Trax is a small SUV, there is plenty of room in the back for a car seat that faces backward. Anchors should be easy to reach, and doors that open wide should make placing the seat simple. If you want to hook up to the back seat, you might have to take off the rear cargo cover. This is a problem that other companies have, too.

How much fuel does it use? The EPA says that the Chevrolet Trax gets 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The 28.7 mpg we got on our evaluation test route was a bit disappointing, even though it’s about average for this class. A few other tiny crossovers did better in our real-world tests.

Does the Trax have any value? Only a few cars in this class cost as little as the Chevy Trax. Some features are missing, like all-wheel drive, but you’re getting a good price. Some of the inner panels are made of hard plastic, but most of them have nice shapes or textures that keep the room from looking cheap. Chevy really did a great job of cutting costs without making them noticeable.

The Trax’s basic guarantee lasts three years or 36,000 miles. The engine is covered for 60,000 miles, which is five years. The package also comes with five years of roadside help and the first service visit.

The Trax’s style is strong and eye-catching without being too controversial. It looks like most other cars in its class. The outside of the small SUV looks good. It’s one of the few very small SUVs that actually looks like an SUV and not just a slightly raised hatchback. This is because it has a high ride height and small styling changes like black trim on the bumpers. It could be a little more fun to drive, but we don’t think it’s too bad—just simple, easy ways to get around.

Even though it costs much more than the base trim, the midlevel LT is the better choice. For a reasonable price, you can get features you want, like a bigger touchscreen, a digital instrument panel, and automatic climate control for two zones. There are also heated front seats.

Different Chevy Trax models

The 2025 Trax comes in five different trims: LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ. All of them have the same 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 137 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Some small SUVs have all-wheel drive, but this one doesn’t.
