Nissan will call back 712,458 Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs in the US between 2014 and 2020 because the ignition keys might not work. The problem only affects the S trim level, which has a “jack knife-style” key that can break and turn off the car while driving. The first notices will be sent to owners on March 17, and they are asked to only use the key fob with the key unlocked and without any other accessories. According to the NHTSA, Nissan recalls 712,458 US Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs due to essential ignition issues. Nissan’s petition says that the ignition key has a “jackknife” shape that could break while the car moves, which could shut down the engine. The problem only affects the base S trim level of Rogue and Rogue Sport SUVs. It affects 517,472 Rogue and 194,986 Rogue Sport vehicles in the United States. Nissan says that the key in the shape of a jackknife is no longer used and that other trim levels and newer Rogues have an Intelligent Key instead. Nissan and Infiniti models are the only ones that are affected. The recall notice says that the key’s internal pivot, which lets it fold, may become brittle over time. This could cause the key fob to unlock and turn downward. The driver’s hand contacting the key could cause the car to turn off by accident. Nissan tells customers to keep the key fob in a position where it doesn’t fold and not to attach anything to it. Dealers and rental fleets will be shown how to correctly put a fastener in the critical slot so that the key doesn’t fold. After Nissan sends out the fix, dealers will put a spacer in the vital place of the owners’ key fobs to keep the key from collapsing. Nissan’s “stop sale” order means that dealers can’t sell, lease, exchange, rent, or loan any affected cars in their inventory until the patch has been installed. Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport owners should look at the NHTSA’s website for recalls to learn more or determine if their car is affected.
