Chevy has made the standard 1500 truck’s Duramax 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine available for the 2024 1500 ZR2. The smaller 3.0-liter diesel engine has fewer horsepower but more torque than the ZR2’s standard 6.2-liter V-8. Chevy made changes to the 1500 series unrelated to the engine. The Chevy Silverado 1500’s big kids are the ZR2 and ZR2 Bison. Chevy made the ZR2 in 2022 and the AEV-upgraded Bison in 2023 for people who take their off-roading more seriously. Starting with the 2024 model year, Chevy wants to make mid-cycle improvements to all its cars. The ZR2 can have the same 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engine as the standard 1500. The brave engine has 305 less horsepower than the big 6.2-liter V-8 (420), but it has a better torque output, which gives it more power (495 pound-feet from the diesel vs. 460 pound-feet from the V-8). We have yet to test the Duramax because it has yet to be updated for 2023. We liked how smooth and quiet it was in regular use in 2019. Chevy is making a V-8 exhaust system that can change based on how the car is driven. New Name and Black Boxes for the Cosmetics Division Not only did the top of the Silverado lineup change but so did the middle. Even though the engine’s specs haven’t changed, Chevy has given the standard 2.7-liter turbo-four engine a new name: TurboTax. The Work Truck’s basic model now comes with OnStar as standard. Wireless connectivity with Apple Carpal and Android Auto is an option, and front and rear park assist will be added to the safety package. A light that indicates whether or not the back seatbelt is fastened will be standard on all Silverado beginning with the 2024 model year. The High Country will have adaptive cruise control as a common feature, and the Midnight Edition will have black motorized running boards. Regarding black trim, the Custom, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss, and ZR2 can now get the Blackout aesthetic package. In 2024, Lakeshore Blue and Slate Gray metallic will be added to the list of possible exterior colors.
