Drivers of cars that run on gasoline or diesel can pull up to almost any gas stop and fill up without a second thought. It’s not easy for people who drive EVs. Electric cars now have a wide range of charge ports, from the odd CHAdeMO to the more common Combined Charging System (CCS) to Tesla’s own North American Charging Standard (NACS). The way Tesla does things is something other companies are also willing to do. Most people agree that the gold standard is the NACS charge port and Tesla’s massive network of Superchargers. Ford was the first company to agree to work with Tesla and use the NACS plug. This was in May. After that, other car companies started doing the same thing, and a few recently announced their plans to work with Tesla. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) said it would make the NACS connection a standard. We’ve made a list of companies that are likely to use Tesla’s plug, as well as those with whom we’ve heard talks are going on, as well as other cars and charging networks. This list will be changed when new agreements are made public or when we find out about new possible contracts. Automakers and Tesla are working together to make cars. Ford Ford EV drivers will be able to use the Tesla Supercharger network beginning in the spring of 2024. Ford’s Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning now have a CCS-type charge port, but they can use Tesla’s fast chargers with an adapter. Ford thinks that by 2025, all of their EVs will have a standard NACS plug. GM General Motors was the second car company to sign a deal with Tesla to use its charge outlet. With an adapter that changes their CCS connectors to NACS, GM EV drivers can use Tesla Superchargers starting in 2024. Beginning in 2025, all of GM’s electric cars must have NACS. The company also said it would sell adapters that let vehicles with NACS chargers use CCS charges. Rivian Rivian, like Ford and GM, has chosen to work with Tesla. Two thousand twenty-five NACS ports will be added to the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV. A connector for these models will come out the following year. Polestar/Volvo Polestar and Volvo are the first companies outside the United States to work with Tesla. Starting in 2025, all EVs made by Swedish companies owned by China will come with a standard NACS port. Like other companies, an adaptor will be ready in the first half or middle of next year to make their CCS links work with Tesla’s Superchargers. Polestar and Volvo will also give people who need to connect to a charger that isn’t caused by Tesla a NACS-to-CCS adapter. Automakers are reportedly talking with Tesla. Hyundai Reuters says that the Hyundai Motor Company owns the Kia and Genesis brands and is considering making its electric vehicles (EVs) NACS-compatible. Even though the Korean automaker has publicly shown interest, Hyundai President Jaehoon Chang is allegedly worried that Tesla’s 400-volt fast chargers don’t allow the higher charging speeds that Hyundai’s 800-volt electrical architecture is capable of on other chargers. Stellaris In a story by Reuters, Stellantis officials said that the company might use Tesla’s charge connector. But there has been no public announcement of an official deal. In the American market, Stellantis works with Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, and Ram, among other cars. Volkswagen Reuters says that Volkswagen is thinking about teaming up with Tesla. The choice to use a NACS port will likely affect other brands made by the automaker that are sold in the United States, such as Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Porsche, and Lamborghini. Networks that charge with NACS Some public charging networks have made deals with Tesla to add the NACS connector to their stations. This is similar to how some makers have made their partnerships public. ChargePoint ChargePoint has said that its charging units will now have the NACS-style socket. The company just said it would happen “soon,” but they didn’t give any more information about when. ChargePoint also noted that it would keep making several types of chargers. America needs to be made better The Volkswagen Group, which owns Electrify America, has said it will use Tesla’s NACS connection. The charging network says that starting in 2025, the new plugs will be put in at its points. It will also keep making other kinds of plugs.
