The US Secret Service is seeking a new car that is less conspicuous than a Chevrolet Suburban and capable of off-road driving. Invoice-pricing asked top Secret Service and GM Defense officers about the car’s traits, and they gave information. We have some ideas for possible platforms, but the Secret Service won’t say anything about the new all-terrain car. A new platform for defense vehicles is being talked about between General Motors Defense and the US Secret Service. In a recent interview with Invoice-pricing, Sean Curran, head of the Secret Service, confirmed this. The new cars might be easier for the Secret Service to hide than their current armed Suburbans, and they would also be better at getting around off-road. The Secret Service no longer uses the famous presidential limos. They also use armored Chevy Suburbans and chase SUVs that resemble the vehicles state police might use. GM Defense continues to work closely with the Secret Service on the development of new vehicles. “You know, we base it on our needs, the threat surroundings, and the terrain,” he told me. Curran said that the Secret Service will use the new platform when the usual parade limousine, also known as “The Beast,” isn’t possible. He didn’t go into too much detail, though. He believes the new vehicle will blend in more seamlessly in Africa compared to the old armored Suburbans, which tend to stand out noticeably in certain areas. Before GM Defense invested heavily in armored cars, the Secret Service and other government agencies would purchase cars from shops and remove the body panels. After that, they would reassemble the car using bolts and then solder the armor all the way through. The problem with this method is that it would add thousands of pounds of armor to passenger cars that weren’t made to handle it. These designs are called “Monster Garage” ones by Stephen S. duMont, head of GM Defense. In an interview, he said that they were often hard to stop once they got going and took a long time to speed up. From now on, GM Defense and the Secret Service can collaborate to develop cars tailored to each individual’s needs. Director Curran left enough room for interpretation so that he wouldn’t have to say exactly what platform he is working with GM Defense on. This is because the Secret Service prefers to keep its operations secret. You have three options to choose from. The General Motors Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV), which is built on the Chevy Colorado ZR2 platform, could be useful to the Secret Service. The Light Utility Vehicle (LUV) from GM Defense, which is based on the HD truck, could also be looked at. Lastly, the two groups are working on a brand-new platform that hasn’t been made public yet.
