• Now, Rivian cars can connect to Tesla’s network of Superchargers.
  • Next month, Rivian will give free Tesla NACS charging cables to buyers of the R1S SUV or R1T truck.
  • From 2025 on, all new Rivians will come with an NACS port that has already been installed.

The auto industry has mostly agreed over the last year that Tesla’s NACS charging station and, by extension, its huge Supercharger network is the best way to handle public charging. Rivian users can now use more than 15,000 Superchargers in North America, and an adaptor is on its way to them for free.

Electric cars can now use Tesla Superchargers, and adapters will be available in April

Rivian, like almost every other carmaker, said it would switch to a connector like the ones used by Tesla and give owners of current Rivians that use the CCS interface an adaptor. The business says that users will start getting their free NACS adapter in a month. The adaptor can only be used with V3 chargers that put out 250 kW. Based on Rivian’s information, Tesla decided that cars with these adapters can’t be used with V2 chargers, which can give the car 150 kW of energy.

The Rivian navigation system now shows functional superchargers, charging speeds, and availability. If you choose the “plug and charge” option for automatic billing, you just have to walk up to the charger and plug it in. The charge will then be applied to the payment method you added to your Rivian account in the app. Now, you don’t have to create a second account and download a different app.

After getting a hold of a NACS adaptor, we were able to test how to charge our long-term Rivian R1T at our local Supercharger network. It went quickly and without any trouble. The first thing we did was choose the Supercharger from the 15.6-inch display’s navigation window. After getting there, all we had to do was park, plug in, and take it easy. If Superchargers don’t show up on your Rivian’s map, owners should know that they can disable the “adapter required” under the “Hide” option.

The first brand-new R1S SUVs and R1T trucks with the NACS charge port will leave the factory in 2025. Only then will owners of existing Rivians be able to connect to the Tesla Supercharger network. This will make more charging outlets available.
