General Motors made a small electric pickup truck with two doors. The truck would compete with the Ford Maverick and fit under the Chevy Silverado EV in the above picture. The EV truck would cost less than $30,000 to start, but there are yet to be firm plans to make it because GM is still figuring out if the new vehicle will work. Full-size and mid-size pickups have been getting more prominent recently, and Ford saw a hole in the market when it released the very small Maverick in 2022. Last year, the company made 74,000 units and sold all of them. The 2023 model year is also sold out. The other automaker in town, General Motors, has taken note, as Automotive News says the company has made some rough ideas for a small, two-door car. AN says it saw pictures of the truck at a General Motors design center in Warren, Michigan, on Wednesday. The planned car would be smaller than the four-doored Hyundai Santa Cruz and Maverick. The truck would be electric, and the bed would be four to five feet long. Even though the car doesn’t have a brand or model name yet, it’s hard to imagine it being anything but a Chevrolet. Prices would start at under $30,000. General Motors is now trying to discover what people might want in a small car. The director of Chevrolet’s low-cost EV and crossover design, Michael Pevovar, said, “We build things to get a reaction and then try to change it or move on.” The project’s primary goal is to make it affordable, but Pevovar knew that a body with only two doors might need to be more significant for the US market, where most cars have four doors. There was no mention of when the electric compact truck would be made, but if GM gets good feedback, we should see it before the end of the decade.
