• A Mazda road car sale set a new record for the most modifications made to a 1992 RX-7 from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
  • A winning bid of about $1.2 million was made at this year’s Bonhams Goodwood sale.
  • The last record-holder for Fast and Furious movies was a $550,000 1994 Toyota Supra, which was purchased for twice that amount.

Han Just Got $1.2 Million For His Modified Mazda RX-7

There is a small chance that Tokyo Drift is the best Fast & Furious movie ever made. The story is weak, the dialogue is silly, and there aren’t many of the original two stars. The cars, stunts, and Sung Kang’s character, Han Lue, are all great, though, and his character’s death on screen is funny enough to make this movie worth watching. Rich fans paid for the third Fast and Furious movie to be made at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

A 1992 Mazda RX-7 with Veilside body modifications fetched an impressive $1.2 million at a Bonhams auction, placing it among the most expensive Mazdas ever sold. One of only two cars that survived the shooting is still around today. Even a casual fan might recognize the black-and-orange paint job as that of Han’s hero car in Tokyo Drift. It ended up just above the seven-figure mark.

A figure that frequently appears in the Fast and Furious movies is Veilside, a Japanese tuner renowned for enhancing the aerodynamic performance of cars. This RX-7 featured a large spoiler on the rear, substantial side vents, and the Fortune widebody body kit, which widened the car by just under seven inches. The only thing it shares with the third-generation RX-7 is the top.

The third-generation RX-7, or FD, is undoubtedly the most attractive sports car from the height of Japanese performance. This is probably not for enthusiasts. It is not surprising, though, that this example of mid-2000s wild tuning culture has sold for over a million dollars. It started as a hero car that has been shown on TV screens all over the world.

The current owner acquired Tokyo Drift in 2008, just two years after its debut, and imported it to the UK. It is said to have been meticulously maintained, driven very little, and checked out by a local rotary expert before being sold. This is a high-value vehicle. Only four years ago, a 1994 Toyota Supra that appeared in the first two Fast & Furious movies was sold for $550,000.

There will soon be a new Fast & Furious movie, as well as a live-action drifting movie starring Sung Kang. This customized RX-7 could become the next-generation Bullitt Mustang. The next person who owns it might be happier with it this time. Han would be pleased.
