The DS SM Tribute, which was unveiled this fall, honors the iconic Citroën SM and may be produced in limited numbers, according to reports from TopGear. The SM Tribute would make use of the platform and the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine derived from the Maserati GranTurismo. If production proceeds, the price is likely to be around $1 million, with fewer than 200 units expected to be produced. The Citroën SM was produced between 1970 and 1975. It has a stylish look and a smooth hydropneumatic suspension. It did have a strange look, but it was built on a Maserati chassis and had the same V-6 engine as the Italian company’s Merak racing car. This fall, Citroën’s luxury business, DS, showed off the SM Tribute concept, which at first seemed impossible. TopGear says that the SM Tribute might be made with a Maserati V-6 engine. The beautiful SM Tribute will only be made in very small numbers, which shouldn’t be a surprise. Thierry Metroz, head of design at DS, says that it will only be made in 50 to 200 units. A separate coachbuilder will build it. The model would be based on the Maserati GranTurismo, and the car already has parts from the Maserati lineup, like the GranTurismo coupe’s windshield. The Nettuno twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 engine in the luxury sports car would make power, which would likely be sent to all four wheels. The Nettuno engine in the GranTurismo can be changed to make 483 or 542 horsepower. TopGear questioned Metroz about the possibility of an electric drivetrain for the SM Tribute. In response, Metroz stated, “When you’re purchasing a million Euro car, an EV isn’t what you want.” Metroz told TopGear that DS CEO Olivier Francois and Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares will back the idea as long as it makes money. Can DS sell enough of its high-end coupes, which cost about $1 million? We really hope so because the DS SM Tribute is a gem that is uniquely French and one of the most surprising ideas we’ve heard in a while.
