• The 2024 Mazda CX-90 will have two levels of power from its 3.3-liter inline-six turbocharged engine.
  • The EPA says that both engine types will get the same 28 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg in the combined cycle, with only minor differences in how well they use gas in the city.
  • The plug-in hybrid’s EPA ratings have yet to be made public.

Last week, Mazda showed off the 2024 CX-90, a new three-row SUV that is both stylish and comfortable. Since the automaker didn’t answer all of our questions at the time, it’s time to tell us more about the engine.

Two versions of the 3.3-liter inline-six turbocharged engine will be available when the Mazda CX-90 sells in 2024. Turbo models will have 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque when using the regular gasoline that is recommended. If you want to trade that garbage for something better, production will go up, but Mazda wouldn’t say by how much.

Cars named “3.3 Turbo S” will have 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Here, you should use premium fuel. You can use regular energy instead, but the power and torque will be lower. On the other hand, Mazda did not give any details.

Also, it needs to be clarified if the differences between these two engines are all in the software or if there are some small hardware changes. Whatever the output of the inline-six engine, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and all-wheel drive are included as standard equipment.

How well each engine works is almost the same for both. According to the EPA, the CX-90 Turbo gets 24 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg overall. The numbers are the same for everything else, but upgrading to a Turbo S version with more power will cost you one less mile per gallon in town.

The PHEV is another choice. The net output stays at 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet when the recommended premium gas is used, and Mazda hasn’t said what it does on 87 octane. Even more frustrating is that no one knows how efficient the EPA is. In the spring, dealers start getting new models, so those estimates should be ready soon.
