• Mercedes-AMG is hinting at a new vehicle set to be unveiled in June, which appears to be the electric successor to the four-door AMG GT.
  • Mercedes previewed the car with the 2022 Vision AMG concept before releasing photos of it testing in camouflage last year.
  • The AMG EV will combine an aerodynamic design with advanced axial-flux motors that are expected to deliver high power while being lightweight and compact.

For the 2024 model year, a second version of the powerful Mercedes-AMG GT coupe was released. The four-door AMG GT model survived with a new plug-in hybrid drivetrain and a slightly different front end. An all-electric AMG GT will soon replace the six- and eight-cylinder versions. Mercedes teased an AMG-only EV on Instagram with a dark picture of an aerodynamic profile before its June launch.

Mercedes Teases A Unique AMG EV Performance Sedan That Looks Great

The dark picture doesn’t let you see many details, but a cut line in the strong rear haunches makes it look like this electric Mercedes will have four doors. The current AMG GT four-door is a liftback because it has a hatchback in the back and a roofline that slopes down. Mercedes seems to be sticking with this approach instead of going for a more standard three-box sedan design.

The Vision AMG Concept was Mercedes’s first hint at this car in 2022. Many of the features, like the clear side windows, won’t be built, but some of the things that make it unique will stay. Mercedes has been using its three-pointed star logo more and more in its headlights and taillights. If the AMG EV does what the Vision AMG did, it could be the boldest use of this theme to date. Mercedes shared photos of a camouflaged prototype that shows the three-piece taillights from the concept car that looked like fighter jet afterburners are already being used in production.

The Mercedes-AMG EV will be constructed on a dedicated platform known as AMG.EA. This platform will have axial-flux motors and a high-voltage battery that should make charging quick. The British company Yasa, which Mercedes bought in 2021, is making these new motors, which the company says have the best combination of weight, size, and power efficiency. Next up will be an electric AMG SUV built on the same chassis as the four-door fastback.

The Mercedes-AMG EV sedan is set to be released for the 2026 model year since the GT63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid was only released in 2024. It may coexist with the gas-powered GT four-door for a few years, and the Mercedes-AMG electric SUV should hit the road soon after.
