Mini Shows Off Two Unique JCW Car Ideas With Sporty Looks

Mini has showcased numerous bold and unconventional designs. British automakers have traditionally offered customers a wide range of personalization options, from checkered designs on mirror caps to sleek black roof finishes. When they made their lamps look like the Union Jack flag, they really went all out for camp. At the IAA car show in Munich, Mini unveiled two striking models developed in collaboration with fashion label Deus Ex Machina, presenting exclusive versions of the sporty Cooper JCW hatchback.

The first idea, called “The Skeg,” is based on the electric John Cooper Works model. This model isn’t available in the US at present due to changes in taxes on imported cars made in China, which have impacted Mini’s production plan. The electric hot hatch is powered by a front-mounted motor that delivers 255 horsepower.

Reports say that the Skeg was influenced by surfing. Its body is mostly made of fiberglass, which is also used to make most current surfboards. Mini says that the big rear wing “responds to airflow much like a surfboard rides the contours of a wave.” It hangs off the roof, and wider fiberglass fenders with rivets that can be seen are slapped on. The semi-transparent fiberglass plates make the Mini 15% lighter altogether.

The silver and yellow paint scheme stands out because of two yellow tension wires that cross the roof just in front of the rear wing. They look like a surfboard being strapped down after a day on the waves. The door handles have been changed to cloth pulls, and the strap pattern can be seen on the dashboard and the steering wheel at six o’clock.

The basic design of the interior includes bucket seats in the style of racing cars that are covered in water-resistant neoprene. This makes it perfect for days when you’re still wet from surfing. The Skeg’s doors and controls are made of sport fiberglass panels, and Mini added wetsuit storage trays made of fiberglass.
