• President Trump said he wants kei cars to be available for purchase in the United States.
  • Trump said that during his recent visit to Asia, he became interested in cars that can’t be sold in the United States, at least not under the rules that are in place now.
  • Trump also said that these small cars would have to be made in the United States, but they would be cheaper for some people.

President Trump Has Allowed Kei Cars To Come Into The United States

For Americans who love cars, President Donald Trump’s comments on Wednesday about rolling back fuel-economy rules were a surprise win. Trump told US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy to clear the regulatory deck so that small cars sold in Asia, like Japan’s kei cars, can be sold in the United States. He announced this while explaining his new plans to make new cars cheaper in America.

Trump’s comments today primarily called for the cancellation of another Biden-era policy. The part about the kei car was an unrelated thought that Trump didn’t mean to say. Even though she looked shocked during the White House meeting, Secretary Duffy continued to support Trump.

While traveling in Asia not long ago, Trump called these small cars “cute” and “beautiful,” but was told that rules would not allow them to be sold in the US. The president said it was ridiculous and that these small gadgets might be sold for less money than the more traditional ones. Trump also praised the fact that smaller-engine cars are more efficient. He suggested that Toyota and Honda could supply these cars.

If you don’t know, kei cars are very common in Japan. Their engine can’t exceed 660 cc, and they must follow strict size rules. The shape or design can be very different, from pickup trucks to mid-engine sports cars and other things. But a lot of them are completely forgotten by cars like the Mazda Miata.

But hold off on calling your Toyota dealer for now. Secretary Duffy appeared shocked by what was said, suggesting that more regulatory work is needed. Still, the government is sure about one thing: if these gadgets are going to be sold in the US, they need to be made here. Of course, Japanese car companies would have to find a place to make those machines here, but that isn’t impossible. American car companies have mostly given up on the small-car market in favor of more profitable SUVs, but they may be able to return to it if rules for small cars are loosened.
