The BMW 5 Series came out in 2024. It could be powered by small four-cylinder engines or hybrid six-cylinder engines, but not by V8s. After being available for purchase for several decades, the V8 BMW 5 Series is being phased out of production. Even though it looks like the M5 will keep the V8 for a few more years, its comeback is still being determined. Since 1992, when it was first offered on the E34 540i, the V8 has been an option on BMW’s midsize car. Even though it wasn’t the most powerful engine on the E34, the V10 in the E60 replaced it in the E39 M5. But since then, the best machine for the primary 5 Series and the M5 has been a turbo V8. But BMW hasn’t said that the V8 will be back for the 2024 model. Now, only a few types that used to have other engines can use it. For example, the 540i xDrive now has a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine with minor hybrid help. The i5 M60 xDrive EV has replaced the 550i as the best M-lite car on the American market. Elsewhere, the hybrid 550e will still be sold. When we asked about the M5, a BMW representative said they didn’t know if the V8 would return. A 2020 Car Magazine article says that it will come back as a turbocharged hybrid with enough power to fight with the XM Label Red. That means the car will have at least 738 horsepower and pound-feet of torque, and there may even be an M5 Touring wagon type. We will know once BMW makes an official announcement, which will likely happen next year. Even though the last V8 M5 hasn’t been built yet, V8s have already been phased out in favor of 5 cheaper Series models.
