Along with the long-awaited R2 SUV, Rivian shocked everyone by also showing off the R3 and R3X, which are smaller versions of the SUV. It is said that their wheelbase is five inches shorter than the R2’s, but they both ride on the same basis. When they go into production later this year, as models for 2027, they will be sold as basic cars.

The Rivian R3’s body parts are thin, and it has the company’s signature look. The back doesn’t hang over too much, and the wheels are pushed out to the sides. Rivian says that the power-operated rear hatch is good for people who need to move bigger items, like surfboards, because it has a separate back glass piece and a full-width taillight.

Since the R3 is based on the R2, it should have a similar engine and battery pack. The R3 should be able to go more than 300 miles on a single charge, and it will take less than 30 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. People should also be able to pick between two electric motors that power all four wheels and one motor that powers only the back wheels. It is known that the more durable R3X can have three motors set up.

The R3X is just the R3 with more speed. It has the same three-motor engine as the Rivian R2, which gives it the most power. There is also more ground clearance on the R3X compared to the regular R3. The tires and wheels are also bigger. The X’s blue paint job is beautiful, and the orange on the front tow hooks and side reflectors looks great, too. The tires have a rougher tread pattern than its brother, and the wheels look like rally cars from the 1980s.

The curved seats inside make them feel like they were made in Italy. The front and back seats of the R3X fold flat, just like those in the R3. The big glass roof lets more air into the car. That would work great for making a temporary place to sleep.

The Rivian R3 and R3X for 2027 have not been priced yet, but they are likely to be less expensive than the bigger R2 model. The R3 could start at $35K to $40K, and the R3X could be $45K to $55K.
