• Today, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, gave a talk at Investor Day in Austin, Texas.
  • Many people discussed the company’s “Master Plan,” focusing only on sustainability.
  • There are rumors that the Model Y and Model 3 will soon get updates.

Today, at Tesla’s Investor Day presentation in Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk gave a different opening speech than most automakers do when they talk to investors.

The event was billed as the third part of Musk’s upcoming Tesla Master Plan, which explains the company’s long-term goals. The first TMP, which came out in 2006, tried to pay for cheaper EVs by selling a high-priced sports car first (the original Tesla Roadster). The second one came out ten years later and added solar roofs with battery storage to Tesla’s product line. It also made self-driving technology safer and allowed Tesla owners to “make money for you when you aren’t using it.” Only some of these ideas have come to pass.

The New Big Plan from Tesla

Musk’s third Master Plan is all about the whole planet. Today, the company said its “goal is to speed up the transition to sustainable energy around the world,” Its most recent plan is “a blueprint for a future where 100% of the world’s energy comes from renewable sources.”

Musk said a sustainable energy economy was possible but would require spending around $10 trillion on new technologies. Stationary batteries and electric cars store 240 terawatt hours (TWh) of energy, while 30 tWh is made by renewable energy (terawatts). Musk said that the pros outweigh the cons, and the rest of the two-hour presentation focused on this idea by showing how Tesla is working towards this goal and how its fleet of cars fits into the bigger picture.

Improvements made to the Model 3 and Model Y

The presentation itself didn’t tell us anything new about Tesla’s cars. Instead, it was filled with rumors about a redesigned Model Y with the code name Juniper. Automotive News says the new Model Y will have a better outside and inside. It will go on sale in 2024. A better Model 3 replacement, “Highland,” is also in the works.

Because of the new platform and built-in battery pack, the unnamed future car can use a different frame than most cars’ traditional frame (box). This cuts costs and speeds up assembly. Tesla didn’t talk about these models directly at Investor Day, but it did talk about how it will build EVs on its next-generation platforms more quickly than now.

Another change is how Tesla has slowly increased the number of its controllers in the powertrains of its cars. Only 20% of the controls in the original Model S were made by Tesla. 61% is the number for the Model Y. Tesla says it will be 85% in the Cybertruck and 100% in cars made in the future. Tesla says that the main benefit of this move will be that they will have more control over all of the software in the car.

At the Investor Day event, there was also a real Cybertruck on display. It had a new type of steering yoke, folding rear seats, and a screen for passengers in the back.
