The Buick Electra's Path Is Reminiscent Of A Dream Car From The 1950s.

The United States had a good time in the 1950s. As more people bought their cars, especially as the first sections of the national Interstate Highway System were built across the country, the car became an important part of American society as the economy grew after World War II. General Motors tapped into the public’s fascination with automobiles to generate excitement about the future of personal transportation, unveiling a bold lineup of concept cars for its Motorama events. The Buick Electra Orbit was made in 2025 by GM’s cutting-edge design office in Shanghai, China. It looks like it would fit right in with the designs at Motorama.

According to GM’s China division, the concept is inspired by the space age and is portrayed as “a design exploration that fuses the nostalgic charm of the 1950s with advanced futuristic technology and an all-electric architecture.” You can see what Buicks might look like in the next few decades in the Electra Orbit, even though it only seems to live in these creative renderings.

GM says that the concept has dramatic proportions that are right for a high-end car. It is about 19 feet long and 6.5 feet wide. The body has a smooth, linear look, and the front end dips low. The headlamps feature six LED elements uniquely shaped like hockey sticks. They are placed on either side of an illuminated Buick sign on the car’s hood’s central spine.

The minimalist headlights are concealed beneath a wing-like extension that gradually slopes down from the fastback’s roofline. The Electra Orbit features large 24-inch wheels, shaped like an old dish, which fit snugly into the wheel openings that protrude.

As you can see in a GM Design Instagram video, the prototype also has active airflow. The part of the rear wing that sticks out rises and splits into two pieces. Two separate panels on the hood retract to channel cool air toward the front brakes. The rear bumper, side skirts, and front splitter all fall forward and downward to make the car’s aerodynamic shape better at high speeds.

The electric engine enables the scissor doors to open up, revealing the spacious cabin. Whether the owner is driving or letting the autonomous driving system do it, the wheel and instrument panel change. The dashboard features a digital monitor that runs its entire length. The “intelligent AI assistant” appears on the dashboard as a holographic projection of a planet surrounded by orbiting moons. The primary physical control is a crystal ball embedded in the center console, designed to provide intuitive, tactile control over various vehicle functions.

The house is made of a variety of materials, including one that resembles red clay and another that is more gray. With crystal trim and a fancy fabric pattern, this looks great. The central spine goes inside, lowering from the dashboard and under the center console before rising in a C shape between the back seats to meet the roof of the vehicle. Its edge is lit up.

The Electra Orbit is undeniably a concept vehicle, signaling no immediate plans for production-ready Buicks. Rather, it appears GM is giving its designers the freedom to showcase their creativity and explore possibilities for what the brand’s future cars might evolve into over the coming years. This is the newest concept car from GM’s cutting-edge design teams for 2025. It comes after the U.K. and California Corvette designs, and it makes us think of a future where the Electra Orbit will live alongside those stunning new Vettes.
