The Camry Looks Stronger In Toyota's SEMA GT-S Concept

The Toyota Camry is America’s most popular sedan due to its longevity and efficiency. Camrys are reliable despite their average powertrains and designs. Toyota’s GT-S concept, which debuted before SEMA in Las Vegas in early November, adds style to the Camry.

The sleek Camry GT-S, based on the XSE AWD model, looks like it came from a Toyota store. Toyota kept the GT-S’s cabin and powertrain untouched. It’s a 2.5-liter inline-four with three electric motors that produces 232 horsepower.

The GT-S is flashier than any Camry on the market, yet it delivers less power. The brilliant “Inferno Flare” paint contrasts with a black roof and half black hood. That hue is also on the headlamp trim above the grille. Completely reworked front bumper with black side vents and a larger grille.

Front- and rear-finned sedan side skirts match the body kit. A significant diffuser is installed behind the black trim piece, which swoops up along the rear bumper’s character line. The SEMA display floor should feature Toyota’s performance exhaust.

Toyota updated the GT-S with a coil-over suspension that lowers the Camry 1.5 inches. Toyota says this makes the car look meaner and improves handling. Black 20-inch wheels and 245/35 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires adorn the GT-S. Upgraded brakes, grip 14-inch rear discs and 14.4-inch front rotors with six- and eight-piston calipers.

Toyota has teased more GT-S options, despite its concept status. Toyota’s CALTY Design Research team in Ann Arbor, Michigan, near the invoice-pricing headquarters, developed it. CALTY principal designer Adam Rabinowitz calls the GT-S “a study in what a performance and style package could mean for Camry in the future” rather than a one-off. He added that the corporation would use the idea to collect client feedback.

Toyota has tried sporty Camrys. In 2005, Toyota Australia released the TS-01 concept, which had a manual transmission, supercharged V-6 engine, and suspension and braking improvements. For 2020, Toyota’s Camry TRD, which features a rear wing, upgraded suspension, and a 301-hp V-6 engine, received a sportier appearance. Though the word is now only used for GR-branded SUVs and trucks, the GT-S might revive something like the TRD rather than the TS-01.
