The Ford Mustang GTD now features an expanded use of carbon fiber thanks to the introduction of the new Liquid Carbon option. With no paint applied, the weave of the bodywork is clearly visible, and the doors are now made from carbon composite instead of sheet metal. The look is totally scary, and the weight loss isn’t very noticeable. The motto of almost all companies that make supercars is “less is more.” To make something lighter, you’ll need more carbon fiber, which is more expensive because it’s a costly material to produce. Ford’s latest carbon-fiber-enhanced Mustang GTD already costs more than $300,000, so no one knows how much more it will cost. However, the new Liquid Carbon package will almost certainly cost more in order to make the heaviest pony car ever lighter. Can we still call the GTD a pony car even though it’s not really one anymore? The Mustang version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR from the late 1990s bears a striking resemblance to this car, which appears to be a regular roadster but is actually full of racing technology. With a lap time of less than seven minutes, the GTD is just as much of a racecar as its two Ford GT predecessors. When the GTD is stopped, its dry-sump 5.2-liter V-8 engine with almost 800 horsepower, rear-mounted eight-speed transaxle transmission, and clever semi-active front suspension are all hidden. The blistered and vent-shredded chassis of this Mustang, on the other hand, makes it clear right away that it is meant to win the race. The exterior is still great even after painting it. The visible carbon fiber is comparable to what you would see on a Horacio Pagani, if you were to remove everything except the clear coat. The GTD’s Liquid Carbon option also shows the car’s frame by adding more carbon fiber to the front panels instead of sheet metal. According to Ford, this option reduces weight by 13 pounds compared to the standard GTD Performance package. What do you care about comments in a spec sheet? People yell “Bring it on” at any Ferraris or Porsche 911s that go by. It’s all about being there. The Performance package is the sole option that includes the Liquid Carbon package. The Performance package eliminates the sound deadening and replaces it with magnesium wheels that are lighter and more aerodynamic. It’s the lightest GTD version by a few pounds, but it still has the whole cabin and is a road car. The regular Mustang GTD is a monster car all by itself. The Carbon Series features a slightly higher amount of carbon fiber in its hood, top, and rear trunklid. This new package meets all carbon-fiber standards successfully. How much carbon fiber do you need? Everything.
