• Honda has said there will be a hybrid version of the small Civic car for the 2024 model year.
  • The company says a hybrid Civic will be available as a sedan and a hatchback. It will have the same drivetrain as the larger hybrid Accord.
  • When hybrid cars come out in 2024, they will sell them alongside vehicles that run on gasoline, which are already on the market.

Honda‘s next step toward hybridization will be the 2024 Civic Hybrid, which will be available as a sedan and a hatchback. As part of its electrification efforts, the company wants to switch to a completely electric portfolio by 2040. In the meantime, it plans to compensate for the gap by offering more hybrid products.

When Honda released a hybrid Civic hatchback in Europe in April of last year, we wrote about it and thought they would eventually bring it to the US to replace the Insight sedan, which had taken off the market. Honda still needs to change the European car’s powertrain for the American market. In Europe, a 2.0-liter inline-four engine and two electric motors work together to make 181 horsepower. We can only hope it does better than the hybrid technology in the 2023 Accord hybrid, which is also linked and makes 204 horsepower.

Honda still sees sedans and hatchbacks as essential parts of its business, even though people buy more light trucks and SUVs than cars.

As part of its plan to get and keep younger customers, Honda is adding a hybrid powertrain to the Civic. Honda plans to start taking orders for its all-electric Prologue SUV this year. This is the first step toward making more of its cars electric in the years to come.

When the Civic hybrid goes on sale, expected to be in early 2024, we will learn more about it.
