• The Lucid Gravity is a high-end electric SUV with three rows of seats for six or seven people or two rows of seats for five people.
  • Lucid predicts a top speed of 60 miles per hour and a range of 440 miles thanks to a small but powerful dual electric motor drivetrain based on the Air car.
  • The first Dream Edition will be made and sent out in late 2024. It will cost less than $80,000 to buy.

The long-awaited Lucid Gravity all-electric SUV was shown off today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and it’s stunning. Many people think it’s big, but the thing that makes them think that is style, not size. The Gravity’s top is smooth and elegant, and it tapers softly into a beautiful spoiler at the back. Lucid says that the possible air suspension will make the drag coefficient less than 0.24 at highway cruising height, which has never been seen before in this class.

Larger on the inside

People say the Gravity is shorter than an Audi Q7. The Lucid Air car’s low top is due to small electric motors and a central battery pack that is slung low. This makes the cabin very roomy. The Gravity’s front seats had to be moved higher anyway, so the two-level battery stack that was under the Air’s back seat is now under those seats. The Gravity’s wheelbase is longer than the Air’s by an unknown amount.

By making these changes, the Gravity design team was able to improve the platform base, which was already low quickly, and add a shocking amount of space inside without having to make the ceiling very high. The fact that the roof is made of glass is helpful. So, adults can fit easily in all three rows, and wide-opening side doors make it easier to get in and out. In fact, the ones in the back open all the way to 90 degrees. The hatch floor is very low for a crossover, and the third row of seats folds all the way down into a storage space in the back, making the inside feel like a minivan. This is possible because the battery is low. The middle row seats can also move, so they can all fold flat to the same level. More than 112 cubic feet of stuff can fit in the seven-seater, and 120 cubic feet can fit in the five-seater. The car is only about six feet tall, though.

There’s more, though. This car’s front trunk has enough room for eight cubic feet of stuff. With Lucid’s optional seat cushion, two people can tailgate (or maybe even nosegay) in the trunk because the lower edge of the “hood” goes down low enough. There are cupholders built into the sides of the trunk cover.

Changes to the Lucid Air Powertrain

At the start, all Lucid Gravity SUVs will have a version of the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that powers the Dream Edition, Grand Touring, and Touring trims of the sedan. The company Lucid has said that Gravity will use an updated version of its 900-volt design, but they still need to give out a list of specific Gravity power outputs or battery sizes. This car will also have a range of “in excess of 440 miles” and be able to reach 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds, according to the people who made it.

They also say that its rapid DC fast-charge rate can add 200 miles to its range in just 15 minutes. The Air Dream Edition, on the other hand, could go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds and had 1111 horsepower.

The SUV’s shorter range and less impressive acceleration make sense if everything else is the same. This is because it has a higher roofline and a boxier shape. It also has to weigh more. There’s more going on here, though. The lower final-drive ratio—which is mathematically bigger, but the exact number has not been released—has been used to make the Gravity SUV better at crawling over rough terrain and towing. The optional Zero Gravity air suspension, which has at least four height levels, helps the base, which can hold up to 6,000 pounds. Lower off-road choices depend mostly on mode and speed, while higher ones need to be changed by hand by the driver.

As for the rest of the suspension, the front had the same five-link setup as the Air car. However, the rear was well hidden by the wide back cover and aerodynamic diffuser. But the Air sedan’s internal link rear suspension could look better. Gravity has said that active rear steering will be offered, but these two features usually need to be fixed. The Dream Edition version we saw also has fixed-caliper brakes with six pistons in the front and four pistons in the back. It rides on 22-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero Elect PZ5 summer tires.

To make something like the Lucid Air Pure, which has a single motor and rear drive, what does this mean? Lucid says that “at launch,” only all-wheel drive will be offered, so we’re not sure. Does this mean that the car that was recently said to cost less than $80,000 will have all-wheel drive? Lucid won’t say much about the Gravity until next year, but it’s an SUV, and two-wheel-drive SUVs aren’t as popular as they used to be.

The $80,000 model will not come with active rear steering, height-adjustable air suspension, three rows of seats, or 22-inch Pirelli summer tires, no matter what.

A brand-new cockpit with great visibility

Things have mostly stayed the same since the Lucid Air, except for how the materials look and feel in general. In the Clear View cockpit, the main floating OLED display screen is put above the steering wheel to make it easier to see and make better use of the space. To make the most of this, the design team raised the seat. The wheel’s top edge has been bent into the shape of a “squircle” so that it doesn’t get in the way of the screen. We haven’t driven the Gravity yet, but everything makes sense, and the car looks fun to be in.

We moved, enlarged, and set the secondary OLED screen in landscape mode so that it works better with media and phone-mirroring apps like Apple CarPlay. It floats in the middle. The Air still has the center-mounted volume roller and physical buttons for setting the HVAC on its metal bottom edge. It has a big center console that can be moved under it. In the front, there is a sliding drawer that can be pushed forward under the main screen. In the back, there is an armrest that can be fully extended using a rear hinge. Bentos are modular pieces that can be moved around and added or taken away by the owner.

A head-up display is another thing that Gravity has that the Air does not. Because augmented reality signals are used, it’s more than just a representation of speed and other important information. This laser-enabled device can still show the lane lines and where the car in front of it is, even if rain or fog makes it hard to see the road. When the guide is on, it also helps you make turns, makes sure you’re going in the right direction, and gets you ready for the next one.

Everything runs on a brand-new operating system called UX 3.0, which Lucid itself made. In order to make everything easy to use, barely noticeable, and even fun, it links all of the above parts together. Some of this thought can be seen in the new steering wheel, which has swipe controls on each spoke that can be used with the thumb. Lucid says it makes it easy to use the system without getting your hands off the wheel if it works as well as any Ferrari 296GTB system we can think of. It says that Lucid Spaces can help you relax while you’re sitting still at a charging station with a perfect mix of sound and graphics. We need to try it to see if it really does that.

Is there going to be a pure model?

Along with the six colors of the Air car, the Gravity will come in nine colors, such as Aurora Green, Lunar Titanium, and Supernova Bronze. New Yosemite and Ojai internal themes have been added to the Mojave and Tahoe schemes that were already there. Three of them are made of nappa leather that has been dyed with plants, and one doesn’t have any leather on it.

The category names have yet to be discovered, but the fact that tickets cost around $80,000 makes it likely that there will be a Pure category that is similar to the Air category. Will the roof be made of steel, and will it have rear-wheel drive? We still don’t know because Lucid won’t swear to it. Reports say that when it first comes out, it will only be available with a glass roof and all-wheel drive. There will likely be a Touring and Grand Touring model based on that. Without a question, the Dream Edition stickers were all over the prototype we were sitting in.

The Gravity is a beautiful and interesting big SUV from a distance. The Lucid is meant to be a great car for long road trips because it has a great range, can be charged quickly, and has an efficient motor. This three-row SUV has a lot of room inside and looks nice, and there is a lot of parking outside. The British would call this car a Tardis, while it’s great.
