The Mercedes Unimog Truck Has Become So Fancy—It's Hard To Believe!

Having a Mercedes G-class is like having a big dog. When you walk, people look at you. Some other dogs will sometimes run off while whimpering. You say, “He’s friendly, so it’s okay.” Then you go around the corner and see someone else walking a real bear. Having a Unimog is similar to the latter.

Mercedes Special Trucks has built the most high-maintenance, high-tech car to date: a luxury Unimog with all the extras. Hellgeth Engineering, which is known around the world for sending modified Unimogs everywhere from the Sahara to Siberia, worked on this project. It has four seats, LED lighting, leather upholstery, and a camera-based system in place of traditional mirrors. The best part is that a real bear could fit in the back of the big pickup truck. Don’t be afraid; he is nice! Oops. Okay, maybe not so friendly.

A tuned Mercedes OM 936 diesel inline-six from Hellgeth Engineering gives the power. This 7.7-liter engine is usually found in tractor-trailers and crane trucks. It has 300 horsepower and 1,033 lb-ft of torque.

You can go just about anywhere in a luxury climate-controlled cabin with the Unimog’s air-conditioned beadlock wheels, low crawling gears, and portal axles that give you great headroom. For instance, an AMG G63 can be driven from one high-end mall to another without any problems, except for the possibility of damaging the tires on the curb. With this Unimog, you could pull the moon out of its orbit if you had a long enough line.

A fancy, high-end Unimog is an unlikely idea, given that the rest of the car is mostly functional. Instead, it shows how much Hellgeth Engineering and Mercedes’ Special Trucks section can customize things. Think of it as an off-road sign advertising Unimogs to people who need to drive over the hardest terrain with very little effort.

It might not be useful for daily life. Unless you add parking on top of other cars, it’s hard to park. Diesel fuel is very hungry for me. A G-Class with an AMG engine would be faster. The bear is still hard to live with, even though it’s perfectly groomed.
