The Lucid Air Pure RWD is the company’s newest and least expensive model. The California-based business that makes EVs thinks it will help them start to sell more cars. The Air Pure RWD costs $5,000 less than the dual-motor, all-wheel drive model, but it has the same range, starting at 410 miles (plus a $1,500 delivery fee). The only longer-range electric cars you can buy in the United States are other Lucid Air models. For $78,674, you get one electric motor in the back with 430 horsepower. With only two driven rear wheels, it takes the Air Pure RWD 4.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. But to get the 410-mile range that Lucid promises, you must keep using the regular 19-inch wheels. You’ll have to pay an extra $1,750 and give up a few miles if you want the available 20-inch wheels. White and black are the only complimentary primary colors, and black leather is the only free choice for the interior. Also, the only material that can be used for the roof is aluminum. Glass is not a choice. The base price still includes heated 12-way power front seats, a heated steering wheel, Lucid’s navigation system, Apple CarPlay, and LED headlights. The clear competitor to the Air Pure is the Tesla Model S Dual Motor, which has all-wheel drive, is said to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.1 seconds, and starts at $76,630 (after $1,390 for the destination). But older companies with the same performance and range will charge more. The BMW i5 M60 can go farther (256 miles), has more power (536 horsepower), and can go from 0 to 60 mph faster (3.7 seconds), but it costs more ($85,095). The Mercedes EQE 500 4Matic ranges 260 miles and starts at $87,050, but it only has 402 horsepower less than the Lucid and goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour slower. Because it has the same battery technology as the other Lucids, the Air Pure RWD can add 150 miles of range in 12 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. Any car costs a lot—nearly $80,000—but the Air Pure RWD seems to be the best deal Lucid has made, and it appears to be on par with goods from well-known companies.
