• Porsche showed off the 718 Spyder RS, the most dynamic version of the Boxster it has made so far.
  • The Porsche Spyder RS will have the same 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine as the 911 GT3 and 718 Cayman GT4 RS. This engine makes 493 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque.
  • When it comes out in the spring of 2024, the Spyder RS will start at $162,150.

Get your ears ready for the 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS, which will be the most aggressive Boxster yet, and then stop and throw them away. A 4.0-liter flat-six engine from the 911 GT3 and 718 Cayman GT4 RS will power the Spyder RS.

493 HP, 9000 RPM, and open air.

There had been rumors’ that there would be a GT4 RS equivalent for a while, but Porsche has now made it official. A few changes stand out, like the droptop on the Spyder RS, but Porsche says in its marketing materials that the engines are the same. The 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine can rev up to 9000 times per minute, making 493 horsepower and 331 pound-feet of torque. This makes it even more substantial than the 718 Spyder, which already had a lot of speed.

Like all modern Porsches with an RS badge, the Spyder RS will only be offered with Porsche’s PDK seven-speed automatic transmission. Like with the Cayman, the gears have been lowered to speed up the car. Porsche says the new RS will go from 0 to 60 mph in the same 3.2 seconds as the Cayman. These figures are probably on the low side, and the new RS will get closer to the 2.8 seconds we got when we tested the GT4 RS in the spring of 2016.

The new RS’s frame mixes the Cayman GT4 & 718 Spyder. It has been lowered by 1.2 inches and comes with speed tuning and Porsche Active Suspension Management. It has canter-locking 20-inch forged metal wheels, suspension mountings with ball joints, and a mechanical limited-slip differential in the back. Compared to the GT4 RS, the spring and damper rates have been lowered. This will likely affect lap times, but it gives the car what Porsche calls “a more relaxed, convertible-style setup.”

The front of the new RS is almost the same as the front of the GT4 RS, but it has a slightly shorter carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic splitter to compensate for the lack of a back wing. On the other hand, the rear downforce is increased by a new, more prominent ducktail spoiler.

Even more, weight is saved when the Welsbach package is added. Carbon fiber is used for the front hood; door mirror covers, upper and lower side air vents, and the Gurney flap on the duckbill. Porsche says that the limited-edition 935 from 2018 inspired the titanium exhaust that comes with the Welsbach package.

Getting rid of weight for a reason

Since this is an RS type, Porsche put much effort into making it lighter. This means that cloth door straps will be used instead of door handles on the inside. Also, when the weather is nice, drivers must physically lower the soft top (top-down) to get the most out of their Spyder RS. If the weather is terrible, you’ll have to leave the car and run back and forth to keep it from moving. The top weighs just over 40 pounds, 16 pounds less than the regular Spyder.

The new Spyder RS will start at $162,150 when it sells in the spring of 2024. Porsche will have a party in June before the public sees the car for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Even though Porsche has always been good at getting people to pay more for less, this price is $20,000 more than the starting price of the Cayman GT4 RS.
