To Charge EVs More Quickly, The 2026 Volvo EX90 Features A System With An 800-Volt Capacity

When the Volvo EX90 was introduced for the 2025 model year, it featured a 400-volt powertrain. The voltage of the three-row electric luxury SUV has gone up after only a year. The 800-volt design used by all 2026 EX90s offers several benefits, including the ability to fast-charge the 107-kWh battery in a shorter time.

The company says that switching the EX90 to an 800-volt system can increase its range by about 155 miles in 10 minutes. This is the same engine that will be used in the new Volvo ES90. That’s 43 miles more than before. For the new EV SUV, a 350 kW DC fast charger is now available. However, Volvo has not said how long it will take to charge from 10% to 80%. It took about 30 minutes for the old EX90, but the new one will be faster. One from 2025 that we looked at had an average charge rate of 127 kW and took 43 minutes to charge from 10% to 90%. Again, both of these measures should get better.

One more benefit of switching to an 800V system is that it has fewer parts, which makes the gear lighter overall. Volvo says the change makes electric cars more powerful, but it doesn’t say by how much. The old EX90 could have had anywhere from 402 to 510 horsepower, depending on its setup.

The EX90 will come standard with an electrochromic panoramic roof in 2026. This roof will allow drivers to adjust the transparency of the glass above their heads. The EV SUV features a more advanced onboard computer, enabling it to incorporate more advanced driving aid technology and other AI features. The latter features safety alerts for road dangers and slippery roads, as well as a feature Volvo calls “Emergency Stop Assist,” which summons help and firmly brings the car to a stop in its lane if the driver loses consciousness. The automatic emergency braking on the new EX90 performs more effectively in low-light conditions and can parallel park with greater accuracy.

The 2026 EX90 is now available for order, but Volvo has yet to announce its pricing. The base price for the 2025 model was $81,290, and the most expensive trim level cost $90,640. Because it is manufactured at Volvo’s assembly plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, it is also exempt from tariffs.
