Volvo Plans To Make A New Electric Car In South Carolina By 2030

Volvo has been pushing for electric vehicles and has released the mid-size EX90 and the small EX30 as new electric SUVs in the past year. The Swedish company, on the other hand, has recently unveiled plans for a new hybrid model, which is expected to enter production within the next five years. This means that not all of the company’s new models will be powered solely by electricity.

Volvo only stated that this new hybrid is a “next-generation hybrid model” designed for the US market and provided little additional information about it. It will be an SUV, though, since Volvo just stopped selling the S60 and S90 cars in the US. Additionally, the wagon lineup now consists only of the higher V60 Cross Country and the V90 Cross Country.

The Ridgeville, South Carolina, plant of Volvo will make the new hybrid car in the United States. Ridgeville is just outside of Charleston. The new model is expected to begin production before 2030. The Polestar 3 and EX90 are being put together in the workshop right now.

This future hybrid car is Volvo’s latest investment in its US factory. US Volvo announced earlier this year that by the end of next year, it would be producing one of its best-selling models, the XC60, in South Carolina. The XC60 got a small update for the 2026 model year. It got new wheels, an 11.2-inch tablet, and a new grille. In the first half of 2025, Volvo sold 21,907 XC60s, representing a 23% increase over the same period last year.

Volvo aims to maximize the potential of its South Carolina plant, which is capable of producing 150,000 cars annually. These improvements help them reach that goal. Volvo states that since construction began in 2015, it has invested $1.3 billion in the Ridgeville plant. More details about the new hybrid car are expected to be released over the next few years.
