The 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 is a small electric SUV that is useful, easygoing, and comfy for most people. Based on the gas-powered Volkswagen Tiguan, the ID.4 is very roomy, which is one of its best features. Additionally, it comes in different trims. 335-hp dual-motor AWD models go the other way, adding a bit more luxury, while 282-hp single-motor models give up power for cost and range.

With two motors and all-wheel drive, the ID.4 is a lot of fun to drive, but it’s not very good at cornering. Strong rivals, like the Mustang Mach-E and Chevrolet Equinox EV, have lowered the ID.4’s starting price, but it’s still a good deal because it offers a wide range of features.

The biggest recent changes to the ID.4 happened earlier, not for 2026. Volkswagen already gave it more power, updated software, and a much larger infotainment screen, so this model year is mostly a carryover rather than a major rethink. For 2026, the confirmed additions are fairly minor. Volkswagen includes a North American Charging System adapter with the vehicle, which helps open access to Tesla Superchargers, and reports also point to a HomeLink mirror addition on certain upper trims.

However, you can use simple voice commands or quick-access steering wheel buttons to skip menus for common tasks, such as adjusting the temperature or launching navigation. Navigation, along with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, is standard. Every ID.4 model is also equipped with a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster that offers customizable settings and responds to voice commands.

Price and How to Choose

The 2026 Volkswagen ID.4 could cost between $47,000 and $59,000, depending on options and specs. We would choose the rear-drive Pro to help the ID.4 go further. When you choose all-wheel drive for the Pro, the ID.4 can deliver more horsepower and speed without drastically cutting its driving range.
The AWD Pro, AWD Pro S, and AWD Pro S Plus trims generate 335 horsepower, while the Pro and Pro S models produce 282 horsepower. Double motor all-wheel drive is available on the AWD Pro, AWD Pro S, and AWD Pro S Plus. Single motor rear-wheel drive is available on the Pro and Pro S.
In the back of the ID.4, a single motor makes 282 horsepower. Cars with two motors and all-wheel drive have 335HP. Even in its most aggressive regenerative braking mode, the ID.4 lacks the distinct one-pedal driving capability that many EV drivers have come to anticipate. However, regenerative braking helps the car recover energy when it slows down. When you press the accelerator, the ID.4 moves off the line smoothly and steadily, but you won’t feel that sudden shove into your seat that more powerful electric cars are known for. The acceleration builds in a calm, measured way, and each press of the pedal feels predictable rather than thrilling. We appreciate the ID.4’s quiet interior—road noise is barely noticeable even at highway speeds—and the smooth, beautiful ride it provides, although it doesn’t handle as well as some other EVs.
  • With two motors, the EPA city rating is 108 MPGe (which means the vehicle can travel about 108 miles on the energy contained in one gallon of gasoline).
  • EPA highway rating: 96 MPGe for twin motors.
In previous tests, the Pro and Pro S models achieved 122 MPGe in city driving, 104 MPGe on the highway, and a combined rating of 113 MPGe. The rear-wheel-drive versions have not undergone any additional testing since 2024. MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent, is an EPA-defined measure used to assess the energy efficiency of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

To put this into perspective, the average American round-trip commute is about 30 miles, so the ID.4 could handle a full week of commuting on a single charge without needing to plug in. For weekend trips, a 240-mile range is enough to reach most nearby getaway destinations and back, though longer journeys may require a charging stop along the way. The EPA last provided range data for the rear-wheel-drive ID.4 in 2024, estimating it could cover 291 miles on a single charge. Since the ID.4 has received only minor updates to its powertrain and battery configuration, the 2026 model is anticipated to offer similar performance. All Volkswagen ID.4 models are equipped with a 77.0-kWh battery pack that can be charged at home using either a 110-volt or a 240-volt outlet. Additionally, the vehicle supports DC fast charging.
The electric VW comes with a range of driving assistance technologies you can choose to use or not. Key safety features include:
  • Most automatic emergency braking systems can detect pedestrians in their path.
  • Lane departure warning is a standard feature that helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
  • It comes with adaptive speed control.

Cargo Capacity:

The ID.4 offers generous luggage and other item storage. For the ID.4, there was room for eight carry-on bags behind the back seat and 26 bags altogether when the back seats were folded down. To put that in perspective: eight carry-ons is enough space for a family of four to pack bags for a full weekend getaway without any crowding or sacrifice. That real-world convenience makes the ID.4 a practical choice for families on the go.

First Row:

The interior features durable woven-mesh fabric upholstery on the front seats, which are heated and designed to withstand daily family use. If you choose the Pro S version, you’ll find perforated faux-leather upholstery that gives the cabin a more upscale feel, along with front seats that offer 12-way power adjustment and memory settings.

Second Row:

The ID.4’s clean, simple design gives rear-seat passengers plenty of head and leg room. A 60/40 fold-flat bench seat in the second row can create more cargo space in the back.

Towing:

The Volkswagen ID.4 isn’t the best vehicle for moving a boat, but it can still pull up to 2,700 pounds. That means you can tow a small teardrop camper or a pair of dirt bikes, making it a practical choice for light weekend adventures and hauling smaller trailers.
