A report in Japan suggests that Toyota and Mazda may be collaborating on a small sports car. Although we don’t know much about it yet, a Mazda-powered GR86 could be an amazing vehicle. For the CX-50 small SUV, Toyota and Mazda already share hybrid technology so that a new project could be beneficial for both companies. In response to a question about the story, a Toyota representative said, “We cannot comment on speculation about future products.” In fact, there are only two problems with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The first is that you should now be able to see more colors. Not only is the Solar Yellow missing, but so is the real British Racing Green. The color Soul Red Crystal Metallic is stunning, and it might be the most beautiful color from a major automaker right now. Another more important problem is that the MX-5 can only fit two people. This isn’t a problem when you don’t have kids or other responsibilities, but what if Mazda made a 2+2 coupe version of the MX-5? That adds more utility to all that fine-tuned fun. The RX-8 and NC MX-5 share some design, but this is something the company has done before. But what if Mazda teamed up with someone who could help pay for some of the research and development needed to make two really great cars? Some people in Japan’s Best Car magazine think that might be the case. The magazine reports that Toyota and Mazda will collaborate on the development of the new GR86 and MX-5 cars. You might be saying “It’s happening!” and running around the room like Michael Scott from The Office if you like the ND MX-5 and have little kids. Remember to stay calm! Let’s take a step back, because, besides Best Car’s sometimes overly optimistic predictions, no company is currently investing much money in making specialized sports cars. Maybe I’m just wishing for this. It’s too bad if not. Subaru and Toyota should be commended for collaborating on the current GR86 and BRZ, which are both enjoyable to drive and reasonably priced (the Toyota more so than the Subaru). The BRZ has never done well for Subaru, even though it is an oddity in their mostly all-wheel-drive range. Will Hiroshima’s technical skills and Toyota City’s money lead to your next affordable 2+2 sports car? Be brave and dream. Mazda, the next special edition MX-5 will come in a beautiful dark green color.
