•  Later this month, Subaru will show off two new STI concept cars at the Tokyo Auto Show.
  • One of the cars, the Performance-E STI, is reportedly the first electric STI model from the brand.
  • The other car is called the Performance-B STI, and it has a regular gas engine.

Since the 2021 model year, Subaru hasn’t sold a performance-focused STI version in the United States. This is a bummer for people like me who enjoy having fun while driving. It’s a good sign that Subaru will showcase two new STI concepts at the Tokyo auto show later this month, but it remains unclear whether the famous brand will return to America.

Subaru Shows Two New STI Concepts, One Of Which Is An Electric Vehicle

Two teaser photos shared by the car company today show that one of these concepts will be the first electric STI. Subaru says that the Performance-E STI shows what the performance brand will be like in the future. The teaser picture shows a sharply angled headlight with unique hash patterns as part of its lighting signature, along with a pointed nose that runs into a front fender with sharp creases. Additionally, the front wheels appear to be positioned quite close to the bumper, which gives the impression of a very short front overhang.

Subaru also states that the Performance-E STI will feature a spacious interior, which makes me wonder if hatchback body styles will regain popularity. A sporty Subaru should also offer an exciting driving experience, an intuitive layout, and a style that draws inspiration from the car’s history.

Since the Performance-B STI concept resembles the current WRX, a new model could be back in production soon. Subaru states that this car features a regular gasoline engine, specifically a horizontally opposed engine. All-wheel drive is also built in. Other than that, all we have is the teaser picture to go on. The hood features a visible scoop and possibly a heat extractor. The grille features red accents, and the front wheels are not equipped with the cladding found on the current WRX. Instead, they appear to have a large flare.

Subaru has other plans for the Tokyo car show, but the STI concepts are undoubtedly the most interesting. During the event, the new Trailseeker EV SUV will be shown for the first time in Japan. The Subaru booth will also have Forester and Outback cars that have been upgraded for the Wilderness. Oh, and Travis Pastrana’s Family Huckster will also be there.
