• Two class-action cases against General Motors over older 5.3-liter V8 engines have been settled.
  • People who were affected will get between $700 and $30,000, and the two law companies that are handling the claims will get around $66 million.
  • Plaintiffs grumbled about how much oil was being used in one case and about idle and speed issues in another.

A Total Of $66 Million Was Paid To Settle Two GM V-8 Class Action Cases

General Motors has settled two lawsuits over how much oil was used in V-8 cars delivered between 2011 and 2014. The clients’ two law firms will receive more than $66 million, and the affected customers will receive between $700 and $30,000.

Car Complaints made the two agreements public. They happened because of two different problems with 5.3-liter Vortec 5300 LC9 engines that were put in GMC Sierras and Yukons from 2011 to 2014, as well as Chevrolet Avalanches, Silverados, and Suburbans. The claimants say that their motors used too much oil because the piston rings were broken. Plaintiffs in one case say that broken spark plugs can make it hard to speed up or slow down. One case is only about cars sold in Oklahoma, while the other is only about cars sold in California, North Carolina, and Idaho. In each case, DiCello Levitt LLP and Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, P.C. raised legal issues.

Customers in Oklahoma who meet the requirements and buy the car in Oklahoma by a certain date can get $700. Customers in the other three states can get $3,380. The owner who filed the class-action suit in Oklahoma will get $15,000, and each of the three claimants in the multi-state case will get $30,000. The two law firms that are defending the classes in the Oklahoma case will get $9.4 million, and the multi-state case will bring in $57 million.

If you have an affected SUV or pickup truck that meets the requirements, the prize is a nice way to compensate for any issues you may have had with your vehicle. You will get a much better deal, though, if you are a partner at one of the firms that is part of the deals.
