In this GMC Yukon Review, we look at why the 2026 GMC Yukon still works so well for buyers who want full-size SUV space, real towing strength, and a more upscale feel than its Chevy siblings. The formula is familiar, but it still lands: three available engines, a roomy three-row cabin, and trims that range from practical to genuinely plush, even if the top Yukons stop short of feeling quite as special as an Escalade.

Imagine yourself settling into the plush driver’s seat of a GMC Yukon, commanding a refined yet powerful SUV that turns every road trip into a first-class experience.

In a way, the GMC Yukon and the long-wheelbase Yukon XL are just more luxurious versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Suburban. All four full-size SUVs share the same chassis, featuring an independent rear suspension for a smoother ride. They are powered by either a diesel inline-six engine, which requires a lot of torque, or one of two powerful V-8 engines. They can all fit up to eight people and their belongings.

However, because they are made of high-quality materials and have numerous useful features, the Yukon twins cost more. The Denali Ultimate isn’t as fancy as the Cadillac Escalade, another three-row GM SUV built on the same platform.

After its major refresh last year, the 2026 Yukon is largely a carryover, so the big changes are really the ones that already reshaped the current truck-like SUV experience: updated styling, a more modern dashboard layout, the large vertical touchscreen, and the stronger availability of key powertrains and trims all remain in place for 2026. This year is more about fine-tuning than reinvention, with the lineup, core engines, and overall packaging staying familiar while small appearance and equipment details vary by trim, including wheel and color availability on upper versions. In other words, if you liked the refreshed Yukon’s mix of big-SUV capability, upscale cabin feel, and newer tech, the 2026 model keeps that formula intact rather than trying to change direction again.

Infotainment and Connectivity

  • A 16.8-inch touchscreen 16.8 inches for entertainment.
  • The Yukon offers comprehensive connectivity via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone compatibility. The sound system options include a basic 10-speaker Bose stereo, an 18-speaker Bose stereo, and an optional high-end 22-speaker Bose stereo.
Every Yukon comes with an infotainment system featuring a vertically mounted 16.8-inch tablet. Customers can use many different apps because they come with Google-built-in software. For Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, it features WiFi and a WiFi hotspot. Buyers can choose between an entertainment system for the back seats and an 8.0-inch tablet that lets second-row passengers adjust the temperature.
The Yukon offers three engine choices: a 5.3-liter V-8 producing 355 horsepower, a 6.2-liter V-8 with 420 horsepower, and a 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine delivering 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque. All engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Drivetrains come with choices like rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.
Each trim level pairs with these powertrains in different ways. The Elevation and AT4 come standard with the 5.3-liter V-8, while the Denali and Denali Ultimate feature the 6.2-liter V-8. The AT4 can also be upgraded to the larger V-8. Across the lineup, all models are available with the diesel engine, making it easy for buyers to prioritize either power or efficiency.
All three powertrains perform as expected, but we prefer the diesel for its ability to deliver low-end torque while conserving fuel. It works great for the Yukon’s weight and purpose. All Yukon models come with a shifter in the steering column and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The standard drivetrain is rear-wheel drive, which is preferred for towing because it better distributes the weight from a trailer and improves stability when hauling heavy loads. Four-wheel drive is also available for those who want extra traction in slippery or off-road conditions.
The AT4 model is designed for off-road use and comes with a two-speed transfer case, 20-inch all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, and an available air suspension that raises the vehicle by 2 inches.
According to company invoice pricing data, the Denali trim featuring a 6.2-liter V-8 engine achieved a 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds during performance testing.
In our independent testing, we found that a Denali model with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, outperforming the previous generation. We have not conducted an instrumented test on a Yukon with a diesel engine, but our test of a Tahoe equipped with the same drivetrain resulted in a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.8 seconds.
  • Twenty miles per gallon on the highway at 75 miles per hour (C/D) (6.2-liter V-8 Denali).
  • The EPA says 14-21 mpg in the city.
  • The EPA rates cars on the highway at 18-26 mpg.
The EPA hasn’t released fuel economy figures for the 2026 GMC Yukon yet. However, if powertrains carry over unchanged from the previous model year, you can expect estimates similar to the 2025 Yukon, which gets up to 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with the diesel engine in a Yukon or Yukon XL with two-wheel drive. For the version with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine and four-wheel drive, the EPA rates it at 14 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway.
At 75 mph on our highway fuel-economy test route, our 2025 Denali test car with the 6.2-liter engine got 20 mpg. With the diesel engine, the last Tahoe we looked at got an amazing 27 mpg. We think the diesel Yukon will have the same effect.
People seeking more advanced driver assistance technologies are charged more because GMC only offers the most basic ones. GM’s famous Super Cruise hands-free driving mode and night vision with infrared object recognition are some of the other features. Automatic emergency braking and front collision warning are standard safety features. As extra safety features, you can get lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and adaptive speed control with hands-free mode.

Cargo Capacity:

The XL version offers significantly more storage space. With all seats folded down, the standard Yukon offers up to 133 cubic feet of cargo space, whereas the extended Yukon XL delivers a more spacious 145 cubic feet. According to tests conducted by Invoice-pricing, the standard Yukon could accommodate six carry-on bags behind its third-row seats. With the second and third rows folded down, the total available space is generous enough to accommodate the luggage or gear of approximately 350 passengers, if you were measuring in backpack equivalents.

First Row:

The Denali models have open-pore wood trim with chrome highlights and laser-etched maps. The Denali also has a front seat that can be adjusted in 16 different ways and has heated, cooled, and massaged pillows.

Second Row:

When the famous and comfortable second-row captain’s seats are added, the Yukon and long-wheelbase Yukon XL can only fit seven people instead of the eight that they can hold without them. The 22-speaker Bose sound system features speakers built into the second-row headrests, which are the most expensive option.

Third Row:

The third row offers plenty of space for adults, making it a good choice.

Towing Capacity

The Yukon, equipped with rear-wheel drive and a 5.3-liter V-8 engine, appears to be the best driver. It can hold up to 8,400 pounds, enough to tow a large camper trailer, a 22-foot wakeboarding boat with trailer, or even a pair of Jet Skis and extra gear for a family trip. By comparison, models with a 6.2-liter V-8 or diesel engine can tow up to 8,200 pounds. Diesel engines have the most torque below 2,000 rpm, which is useful for pulling heavy loads out of a boat ramp, while V-8s have the most power higher up in the rev range. When four-wheel drive is chosen, all tow values drop by 200 pounds.
Several technological advances have also made towing trailers easier. For instance, GMC’s Transparent Trailer View technology makes the trailer appear invisible, allowing drivers to see the area directly behind it. There is also a jackknife alarm to help you avoid making that mistake.
The estimated price range for the 2026 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL is $69,000 to $104,000, with final cost varying by trim level, optional features, and chosen configurations. We think the Elevation trim is the most useful, except for VIPs. The AT4 is clearly the better choice for people who want to go off-road or need to reach a remote house.

Trim matters too: Elevation is the practical value play, AT4 is the right move if you actually need off-road hardware, and Denali or Denali Ultimate are the ones to choose if cabin feel is part of the reason you are shopping Yukon in the first place.
