• The AMC Matador coupe was a great example of their free-spirited design attitude.
  • Compared to cars like the Buick Regal and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, it looked like it was from a funhouse.
  • AMC asked famous fashion designer Oleg Cassini to help them make the show more appealing, and the Matador you see above is the result of their work together. You can bid on the item until July 24.

People who like to root for the underdog have always been interested in the story of the American Motors Corporation. Even though AMC had the huge amounts of money that the “Big Three” American automakers did, it was always coming up with new and exciting ways to get people into stores. One part of AMC’s plan was to pair a famous designer with a car. The Hornet X Gucci Sportabout was the first car in this plan. It also gave Oleg Cassini’s name to the very beautiful Matador coupe at the height of the personal luxury coupe craze in the 1970s.

1975 The AMC Designer, a Matador Oleg Cassini car was found today on Bring a Trailer

Hearst Autos owns both Bring a Trailer and Invoice Pricing. On Bring a Trailer, they have a 1975 AMC Matador Brougham with the Oleg Cassini kit that they want to sell. It’s kind of like the cologne from the Ron Burgundy movie Sex Panther but for cars. Copper accents and Cassini crests give it the rich, shady charm of an infamous lothario.

If you haven’t read anything about Cassini before, this movie will have even more controversy than House of Gucci. He was born in Paris to an Italian mother and a Russian father, giving him royal blood. He was made a count and moved to the United States after winning a fight. He asked Grace Kelly to marry him there, made clothes for Jackie Kennedy during the Camelot White House era, and charmed everyone, even Marilyn Monroe. He finally became well-known in the Hollywood star scene.

Cassini was one of the first designers to let other people use his name on goods. He was just as promiscuous in business as he was in his personal life. His most famous job was enthusiastically charming women. He also made some interesting clothes, like the Nehru jacket for men and couture for women that was based on military outfits. In the 1970s, Cassini was a lot like James Bond but without the fancy tools and hard tasks of spy missions.

When we talk about James Bond, the Matador became famous when it was used by the killer Francisco Scaramanga in “The Man with the Golden Gun.” The 1975 movie Matador, which came out a year after the made-up flying car, was actually designed by Oleg Cassini.

This top-of-the-line Brougham trim level comes with a vinyl top in the 1970s style. This Matador wasn’t a small one; it was a medium-sized one. Under the hood is a 360-cubic-inch V-8 engine with a three-speed automatic gearbox and 175 horsepower. This engine is perfect for cruising around Hollywood Boulevards at midnight.

Reports say that only 1817 Oleg Cassini Matadors were made for the 1975 model year. There is a very small chance that you will see another one. This one has 95,000 miles on it and 15-inch wheels that were added aftermarket. They look great with the style. If the outside looks classy, the inside is even more so, with orange carpets and copper-buttoned cloth seats from the 1970s.

You can win one of AMC’s most unique losers by going to Bring a Trailer. No one is interested in Oleg’s car, so it is going home with someone else. He always did. The sale will end on July 24.
