Per Ekstrm, an expert on car bodies from Norway and a Saab fan, wanted to make something special for Saab’s 50th anniversary in 1997. He chose to make a one-of-a-kind coupe based on the Saab 900, and the head office of the Swedish company in Trollhattan permitted him and helped him. The partnership ended with this 1997 Saab EX Prototype, which is still around and will soon be sold at auction.

The body of the EX Prototype was originally a 1990s Saab 900 II, but it was later Refined with more Saab body parts. For example, the wider wheel arches and back glass came from a Saab CS 9000, while the rear mirror came from a Saab 900 Cabriolet. After that, a handmade body was made to tie everything together. The height of its roof was cut down by almost three inches. It is also a smooth job; multiple plans and a clay model were made to ensure everything was perfect before building. Even suggestions from the Saab workshop are said to have affected its design.

Whoever buys this car will get all of the original plans, estimates, and communications with Saab and permission from the Norwegian traffic authority. Even though the EX Prototype was the only one of its kind, it was legal to drive on public roads. The EU looked at it from a technical point of view as recently as July 2023.

Fans of Saabs will like the five-speed manual gearbox and the well-known turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. Because it is built on the Saab 900 in every way, it is easy to fix and get parts for (at least as easy as it is to get details for any other Saab). Even though it is one of a kind, it is easier and more expensive to keep up than any other Saab.

It also looks like something made in a factory. It looks like a model for a mass-produced car that was never completed since Saab paid for the project and only used Saab parts. Also, the style is excellent. I just found out today that I wanted a 900 Coupe with a low windshield.

The car is now in Belgium, and Bonhams says it could sell for between €60,000 and €90,000, which is between $64,301 and $96,452. It will be completely legal to drive on the road, and since it is over 25 years old and will stay in Europe, it should be allowed to be taken into the U.S. Whoever gets this car will have something truly unique: a one-of-a-kind design that can be driven every day, is easy to fix, and does not cost much to keep up. It will make car fans all over the world look twice. Bonham says that is a price that is worth paying.
