Mitsubishi says the Triton won’t be available in the US. Unfortunately, the new small pickup offers many things American trucks need. Consider a high, single-cab diesel automobile with torque vectoring. If so, stay reading—it gets better.

The Triton, formerly the L200, was modified after nine years. The new Triton will have single, extended, and crew cabs and be bigger but lighter. The ladder frame is 40% stronger, and the front suspension moves farther. Even though the rear has leaf springs, the shocks are better.

Mitsubishi installed a step to the back bumper and lowered the door by 1.8 inches to make loading easier. Bed length is unknown. Mitsubishi indicated the truck was one-ton, but we need to determine its carrying or pulling capacity.

All Tritons will have a 2.4-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine and variable-assist electronic power steering. At 1,500 rpm, this engine produces 201 hp and 347 lb-ft. The base transmission is a six-speed manual with a problematic “shift by wire” approach. However, an elevated rear-drive car will sound like a front-runner.

Both six-speed automatics have rear-wheel drive or “Super Select 4WD-II.” A torque-sensing middle differential and two-speed transfer case send power 60% rearward. This also features terrain modes for specific powered wheels, gear ratio, and differential lock combinations. It aids downhill.

Lancer Evolutions have Active Yaw Control torque vectoring. The Triton’s “active LSD” controls traction using brake force. Though more substantial, it has a lower turning radius than the previous model.

Updated technology, aesthetics, and interior make it more comfortable and valuable. Except for its dorky “Beast Mode” appearance, the Triton is the best-looking Mitsubishi. Yamabuki Orange Metallic paint is beneficial.

To hold more cups and store more, the middle console was enlarged. Like Ford, it has wireless charging, USB ports, and glove-friendly controls. Mitsubishi altered the engine oil drain, so off-road versions’ underbody protection doesn’t have to be removed during oil changes. The Triton includes adaptive cruise control, LED daytime running lights, and other high-tech driving aids.

Thailand sells 2024 Mitsubishi Triton. Next year, it will visit Southeast Asia and Australia before returning to Japan. Mitsubishi wants to return to the pickup game, but it won’t come to the US. It’s a cool truck. Therefore, we blog about it.

Because a likely prototype was seen testing in Colorado earlier this year, its electric brother, which is coming, may replace it in this country. The new Triton sounds nice, so seeing if the Mitsubishi electric pickup is a worker or a toy like the Rivian R1T will be fascinating.
