It may be a sign from God that all mid-size pickup trucks are new at once. Last year saw new Chevrolet Colorado, Ford Ranger, and Toyota Tacoma models. This neighbourhood used to have boring old automobiles, so let’s line them up and compare.

Powertrain

The base Tacoma SR has an eight-speed automated transmission and a 228-horsepower, 243-pound-feet turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-four gas engine. When you choose a six-speed manual gear, the engine output drops to 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet from 278 and 317 when you select a different grade. Another electric option is a 2.4-liter hybrid power plant with 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

Chevy Colorado has three engines. They have 2.7-liter I-4 turbocharged engines and eight-speed automated transmissions. The Turbo Plus variant has 310 horsepower and 390 pound-feet, while the standard version has 237 horsepower and 259 lab-ft. The Turbo HO (High Output) powerplant, standard on the ZR2 and available elsewhere, can raise torque to 430 pound-feet with software.

The 2024 Ford Ranger’s two non-Raptor engines have 10-speed automated transmissions. The 2.7-liter V-6 engine produces 315 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque, while the standard 2.3-liter turbocharged I-4 engine produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. With a 3.0-liter V-6 engine producing 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the Ranger Raptor is even more significant.

Pulling and Carrying

Toyota has yet to release the full 2024 Tacoma specs. We don’t know the lineup’s towing and payload restrictions, but the non-base 2.4-liter can pull 6500 pounds and the hybrid 6000 pounds. We only know the combination can carry 1709 pounds.

Chevrolet Colorado can haul more. LIKE THE TACOMA HYBRID, the ZR2 can tow 6000 pounds, and most trims can tow up to 7700 pounds. However, the base WT and LT trims need updates. Trail Boss, Z71, and WT/LT Colorado’s can draw 1587 pounds. The ZR2 can only pull 1151 pounds.

The Ford Ranger’s engine capacities differ, but the tale is the same. 4×2 versions can draw 1805 pounds, and 4×4 models 1711 pounds. However, both can pull 7,500 pounds. Ranger Raptor is weaker. It stretches 5,510 pounds and carries 1,411.

Automobile brakes and springs

All 2024 Tacomas may have updated suspension parts. The SR, SR5 XtraCab, and TRD PreRunner have multi-link rear suspensions instead of leaf springs. The TRD Off-Road uses Bilstein monotube shocks with remote reservoirs; the TRD Pro uses Fox adjustable internal-bypass shocks, etc. Toyota’s adaptive shocks make the Limited more comfortable.

Colorado’s easier. Non-ZR2 vehicles use twin-tube shocks and leaf springs. The ZR2 retains Multimatic DSSV dampers. I am finishing now. Beautifully simple.

Ford Ranger’s easy. All models have external back-leaf springs and shocks. The Ranger Raptor sports a Watts-style rear suspension with trailing arms instead of leaf springs and a coil-over front suspension with adjustable Fox Live Valve dampers.

All three automobiles have four-wheel disc brakes. Toyota, welcome to the future.

Off-Road

Toyota has only discussed the Tacoma TRD Pro’s off-road abilities, and it needs to be clarified when additional models will be discussed. The TRD Pro boasts an 11-inch movable ground clearance and 9.5-inch ground clearance. Its approach, break over, and exit angles are 33.8°, 23.5°, and 25.7°, respectively.

Colorado ground clearance ranges from 7.9 inches (WT and LT) to 9.5 inches (Trail Boss) to 10.7 inches (ZR2). The Z71 has a 29.1-degree approach angle, a 19.5-degree break-over angle, and a 22.3-degree exit angle. Trail Boss angles are 30, 21, and 22.4. The ZR2 has the best trim with 38.3 degrees of approach, 24.6 degrees of break over, and 25.1 degrees of exit.

Running ground clearance of the Raptor ranges from 8.8 inches on rear-drive vehicles to 10.7 inches and from 9.3 inches on four-wheel drive vehicles to 10.7 inches. The 4×2 approach, break over, and departure angles are 29, 21, and 25.1. 30, 23, and 25.8 degrees in a 4×4 configuration. The Raptor beats the Ranger’s 33-degree approach, 24-degree break over, and 26.4-degree exit angles.

Body mass

Two- or four-door Tacos exist. The four-door variant has a five-foot bed, whereas the two-door has a six-foot bed. The Colorado and Ranger have five-foot beds.

We have some Toyota specs. However, Chevy and Ford provided many measurements. The Ranger’s 128.7-inch wheelbase is shorter than Colorado’s 131.4-inch spread, while the Tacoma’s 131.9-inch spread is the longest. Colorado is the tallest. The Ranger and Colorado offer similar rear legroom. Toyota wouldn’t discuss the interior.

Tech

The standard 2024 Toyota Tacoma will include an 8-inch infotainment screen and a 7-inch instrument cluster. High-end models offer 14-inch centre touchscreens and 12.3-inch digital gauge displays. Three front-row USB-C connectors provide wireless smartphone mirroring. Backscatters need more USB-C ports. Some connected-car systems use digital keys for keyless entry.

Ranger technology is better. Its 8-inch digital gauge panel and the 10.1-inch central display on base models may be enlarged to 12.4 inches. Every Chevrolet Cruz boasts an 11.3-inch infotainment screen with wireless smartphone mirroring. This increases technological accessibility.

All three automobiles are new, and only one is for sale, making pricing difficult. We will know Tacoma’s price later this year. The Raptor costs $58,555, while the base 2024 Ranger XL costs $35,755.

However, everyone knows Colorado prices. The two-wheel-drive Colorado WT costs $30,695, while the four-wheel-drive LT costs $33,095. Trail Boss expenses are $38,495; Z71 $41,395. The rugged ZR2 tops the list at $48,295, less than the Ranger Raptor.
