• Ford has made the GTD, a rare Mustang version, known to the public.
  • It has a boosted 5.2-liter V-8 engine, active aerodynamics, and other track-focused improvements.
  • It will be made in small amounts starting next year and will cost around $300,000.

When Ford CEO Jim Farley saw the clay model of the Ford Mustang GT3 road car in the design office, he decided that the Blue Oval should make it. The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is a street-legal form of Ford’s future race car, which will debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona before going to Le Mans. It started with the idea that a Mustang could win Le Mans.

Since racing rules won’t apply to the GTD street car, it will have more power (about 800 horsepower) and active aerodynamic features that aren’t allowed in the series where Ford will race the Mustang GT3. Ford plans to make a small number of street-legal GTDs. They want this super Mustang to be able to fight with the best race cars in the world.

Farley said it was for the AMG Black, the Aston Martin, and the Porsche GT3 RS. We want to beat it at Le Mans and on the streets.

Ford Performance and Multimatic came together to make the Mustang GTD

The Ford Performance & Multimatic GTD starts as a standard “body-in-white” Mustang that goes from the model’s factory in Flat Rock, Michigan, to the Multimatic factory in Canadian Ontario. The eight-speed dual-clutch Tremec gearbox of the GTD transaxle is then put into the back of the Mustang shell. The gearbox is kept cool by a transaxle cooler attached to the trunk lid. We couldn’t check out the room in the trunk under the ducting and radiator for the transaxle-cooler, which Ford says is still available.

The weight is moved backward by putting a transaxle in front of the engine and connecting it to it with a carbon fibre prop shaft. Ford says that the weight balance of the GTD is almost exactly 50/50, which is a nice comparison to the Mustang Shelby GT500, which is 56.6/43.4 percent.

The car company is keeping the GTD’s final weight a secret. The structure is carbon fiber, except for the metal door skins.

Before your request, you can choose to have exposed carbon-fiber panels like those on the GT racecar. But in the long run, such a choice might be too expensive and cause too many problems.

Without a doubt, the GTD will move quickly. The power comes from a version of the Shelby GT500’s 5.2-liter turbocharged V-8 that has significantly been changed. In the GTD, the bent-eight engine should make around 800 horsepower, up from 760 horsepower in the GT500. The engine’s top speed will be 7500 rpm.

With the help of a dry-sump oil system, the engine should keep all eight pistons well-oiled on the track. Even with this change, the machine is in the same place as in the GT500. As part of an optional titanium exhaust made by Akrapovic, two big pipes sticking out of the back of the car release hot air.

The GTD has a launch-control system to help the big 345/30ZR-20 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires grip the road better. The front of the GTD has 325/30ZR-20 tires, some of the most enormous tires we’ve ever seen on the front of a production car.

The rubber grips better when the suspension is changed. Multimatic’s new unequal-length control arms and adaptive spool-valve (ASV) dampers comprise the front suspension. The rear suspension includes a pushrod-style multilink with ASV dampers on the inside and coil springs.

In addition to the regular forged aluminum wheels, there are also forged magnesium wheels that are even lighter and help reduce the weight that is not supported by springs. Behind the wheels of the GTD are huge carbon-ceramic brake pads. The front wheels don’t get too hot because of special cooling ducts.

The Wing is coming with GTD

With the push of a button, the GTD’s body drops about 1.6 inches to improve its aerodynamics. The considerable Wing that hangs over the C-pillar can be bought separately. It has an active drag-reduction system (DRS) that boosts downforce as needed and is controlled by hydraulics.

The vents on the front fenders and hood look like they came from a Le Mans car. For people who want the most efficient package, Ford will offer a carbon-fiber underbody with active front flaps that hydraulics can move.

When seen in person, the GTD has wider-than-imagined sides and fenders that are sculpted excitingly. Ford’s Shelby GT500 looked like Danny DeVito to the GTD’s Arnold Schwarzenegger because it had a four-inch wider track, a more aggressive stance, and more significant proportions.

The test car had dark windows that made it hard to see inside. Still, we could see the new Mustang’s big dashboard, multimedia screens, and two front seats with Recaro fabric that looked like it was made for racing. There are no seats in the back. The GTD’s choices list includes a 3-D-printed rotary shifter and shift paddles made of titanium parts from a Lockheed Martin F-22, fitting for its massive Wing.

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD will be made more than a year from now. Ford plans to produce between 1,000 and 2,000 of these fast Mustangs. We’re sure that Ford will sell every one.
