• The 2024 BMW i7 M70 xDrive is the company’s newest top-of-the-line electric car. It has two electric engines that together produce 650 horsepower.
  • BMW says that the launch control setting raises power to a maximum of 811 pound-feet, which lets this luxury monster go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds.
  • The M70 has black trim outside and a two-tone paint job that stands out.

The top dog in BMW’s electric range has changed. The 2024 i7 M70 xDrive, BMW’s most powerful EV, will go on sale in the second half of this year. The two electric motors in the luxury car make a total of 650 horsepower, more than the 536-hp i40 M50 (which BMW says is the best-selling M vehicle in the world) and the 610-hp iX M60. BMW’s most powerful electric motor will be the 483-hp rear unit made just for M.

To make use of the M70’s full 811 pound-feet of torque, either the launch control option or the M Sport Boost function must be engaged. BMW says that the M70 is its fastest electric vehicle because it can reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. In Sport mode, drivers have to make do with 748 pound-feet of torque and a top speed of 155 mph, which is still ridiculous.

The M division changed the chassis, and the high-performance i7 sits on an adaptive air suspension with electronically adjustable dampers made just for M cars. The body has been strengthened, and active roll stabilization and rear-wheel steering should make the large car look more agile. The rear single-piston floating-caliper brakes and the front four-piston fixed-caliper brakes are blue with an M logo. A black finish is offered as an option. The M70 has unique 21-inch wheels, but you can also get 20-inch speed wheels.

Despite how well it performs, BMW says that the 101.7-kWh battery will have the same range as the regular i7, which is 295 miles. The M70 can only go 56 mph in the new Max Range drive mode, which also turns off the climate control, heated and cooled seats, and heated steering wheel. With the left paddle shifter, you can choose the M Sport Boost function, set the window defroster to its highest, or push the accelerator foot to the floor to turn off Max Range. BMW says that the battery in the i7 M70 can be quickly charged (up to 195 kW) and can go from 10% to 80% in just 34 minutes.

The M70 differs from other i7s because it has black trim, side skirts, and an insert in the diffuser at the back. The M Performance Professional package includes the following:

  1. A black rear spoiler.
  2. A black trim piece between the taillights.
  3. Black trim on the back bumper.

Like other i7s, the M70 can be painted in two colors, and the shape of the prominent kidney grille lights up.

The i7 M70 comes with BMW’s latest operating system, which has a redesigned home screen with a column of icons on the left side for quick entry to specific features. The curved screen also has pictures and a style unique to the M. When production starts at the end of 2023, BMW will announce pricing details. The M70 will cost $145,000 since the starting price of the iX M60 is about $25,000 more than that of the regular iX.
