The specs and price of the future plug-in hybrid 5-series have been made public by BMW. The 550e xDrive has an eight-speed automatic drive, a gas engine with six cylinders, an electric motor, and a 19.4 kWh battery pack. In the United States, the 550e xDrive will go on sale in the spring of 2024, with costs starting at $74,795. Even though the i5, a new electric model, is coming out, the latest BMW 5-series luxury car will still have a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The new BMW 550e xDrive for 2024 now has specs and a price, and it will be available in the United States in the spring of 2024. As the badge says, this new hybrid car has much more power than the BMW 530e PHEV that came before it. It has 483 horsepower because it is driven by a gasoline engine with six cylinders instead of four. The battery pack is 19.4 kWh bigger than before, and the electric motor is built into the eight-speed automatic gear. Even though we don’t yet have EPA ratings, global WLTP range figures show that this larger battery should be able to give nearly twice the electric range of the previous 530e, or about 40 miles on the EPA cycle. We put pictures of the combined 530e made for Europe instead of the 550e because we still need photos of the 550e. This BMW PHEV system with a four-cylinder engine will remain available in other areas. It has the same battery pack and 295 horsepower. In the United States, only the 550e will be sold, and it may look different from the one shown above. For example, it may have a M Sport body package and bigger wheels. The base form 550e will cost USD 74,795, more than the 530i or 540i gasoline cars in the 5-series. The hybrid will be the second-most powerful 5-series car after the $85,095 electric i5 M60 xDrive until the new M5 comes out. In the spring of 2024, the 550e should be in American stores.
