• Lancia’s first hot hatch since the 1990s, the Ypsilon HF, has been shown off.
  • The HF has a single electric engine on the front axle that makes 237 horsepower.
  • There is also a rally-racing Ypsilon with a 1.2-liter supercharged three-cylinder engine that makes 209 horsepower.

Lancia only did something for a short time, but they did make the Ypsilon City car and a few rebadged Chrysler models. Stellantis is trying to bring back the once-dominant Italian brand by announcing that the updated Ypsilon will have a sportier HF version. This version will be similar to other Stellantis hatchbacks, like the Peugeot 208. It’s even more exciting that the HF will lead to a rally racer. This will be Lancia’s first move into racing since the 1990s.

A race car based on the Lancia Ypsilon HF pays tribute to the brand's history

The new Ypsilon HF is the first electric Lancia to have the “HF” name on it. It has an electric engine in the front that sends 237 horsepower to the front wheels, up from 154 horsepower in the regular car. The engine in both the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce and the Fiat 600e Abarth is the same. Lancia says it takes the HF 5.8 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. The fuel comes from a 54.0-kWh battery, and Ypsilon’s usual range estimate of 250 miles will probably change.

A hexagonal black strip with a number of vents and the HF logo, which has returned with its famous red elephant, makes the front of the HF stand out more. Lancia also says that the HF will have better handling because it will have a bigger wheel track and lower suspension. Also, the new wheels look really nice. Starting in May 2025, the Ypsilon HF will be sold in Europe. Plus, Lancia has revealed that two of its new models, the Gamma and Delta that have been brought back to life, will be HF versions.

Lancia said it was coming back to rally racing with the release of the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF. Rally racing became popular in the 1970s and 1980s. The Ypsilon Rally 4 HF is not like the road car; it has an internal combustion engine with a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder supercharged design that produces 209 horsepower. All the power goes to the front wheels through a limited-slip differential and a five-speed sequential gearbox. Based on its power output, the HF plays in the FIA’s Group Rally4 class, not the top class of the World Rally Championship.

Whether Lancia’s return to racing adds to its already impressive collection of World Rally Championships or not, the release of the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF shows that the company wants to give the brand a more focused and competitive edge. We hope that the Ypsilon HF can be used on the road in the United States, but we’re glad to see Lancia back from abroad.
