Fans of General Motors may have missed out on one of the most excellent SUVs on the market right now. GM Authority said in 2017 that a GMC Jimmy would be made to fight with the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. It also would have come with a V8 engine. Sources close to GM Authority said that the 31xx and 32xx frames from the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon would be changed and used to make a new GMC Jimmy. It was a little different because GMC wanted to offer a V8 engine, meaning the frame of the 31xx had to be changed. More importantly, the changes to the structure made it too expensive for GM to make a Chevy version, so it is only available as a GMC. Also, it wouldn’t have been like the current Chevy Blazer, a crossover with front-wheel drive. Sources say that Jimmy’s base engine would have been GM’s 2.7-liter “TurboMax” four-cylinder engine, which would have allowed it to start at about $40,000. On the other hand, a V8 version would have made it stand out from the other cars in its class. The Jeep Wrangler 392 now has a V8 engine, but it didn’t back then. The Jimmy would have been the first car in its class because it had eight cylinders. Ford might have used the Jimmy V8 instead of the twin-turbo V6 in the Bronco Raptor if it had been available. As automation and electric vehicles became more critical, it was too bad that GM chose to stop making the GMC Jimmy and the 32xx chassis. The Hummer EV is GMC’s first off-road car on the market. So, instead of a reasonably priced off-roader with a V8 choice and mass-market appeal, we now have a 9,000-pound electric SUV with 1,000 horsepower and a six-figure price tag that few people can afford. The Chevy Colorado Bison and GMC Canyon AT4X are both trucks made by GM. They both have a lot of power and can go off-road, but they are less valid for daily use than a Jimmy would have been, and neither has a V8 engine. With GM’s current truck design language, the ability to go off-road, and a V8 engine choice, it’s safe to say that GM fans would like a new GMC Jimmy. If this is true, people who want GM will hate the Hummer EV because it took away their Jimmy.
