Acura has a strong lineup of both operating and dormant brands. It brought back the famous Integra nameplate, starting with the legendary Legend. Acura is looking through its old records to find a name for its future electric SUV, which will be its first all-electric product. However, it is seeing an odd fossil: ZDX.

Tell me about the Acura ZDX.

The ZDX name was initially given to a one-generation flop, a fastback-styled SUV that came out for the 2010 model year but didn’t sell well enough that it was only offered until 2013. It’s one of Acura’s “_DX” SUV names, like the RDX and MDX, and it sounds pretty cool.

Depending on your point of view, the ZDX was either misread and unfairly made fun of for having Acura’s favourite grille of the 2000s, a “beaky schnoz,” or it deserved to be burned. The first ZDX was mostly a copy of the coupe-SUV style started by the BMW X6 two years earlier. This showed how unfair most things in life are.

Like the BMW, the Acura was based on a standard SUV (in this case, the Acura MDX family hauler), but it had a lower, more sloping profile to make it look better and have less space for luggage. It had a bad V-6 engine and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), which sends power to different wheels. The BMW X6, which had v-8 solid engines, lived on and did well, leading to the smaller X4 model and Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Infiniti rivals. On the other hand, the ZDX did not.

The ZDX has come back.

Acura is giving the ZDX a new lease on life by using the name for its upcoming electric SUV. When Acura announced the name of its forthcoming SUV in EV, it called it a “performance” car and said it would look like the Precision EV concept. Even though the Precision EV concept link doesn’t officially rule out a fastback roofline, it’s important to note that the demo car has a very classic look and doesn’t have any unique features like the original ZDX’s pointed grille, even though it’s covered in LED lights.

Acura-speak for the most potent version of a particular model, the Type S variant, will be available, giving even more power. At the top, you can see an “S” hidden prototype of this model. The last version of the now-discontinued NSX supercar was a Type S model, and you can now buy TLX and MDX Type S models. Want to know what the ZDX will look like without the camo? Acura says the Precision EV idea, shown for the first time at this year’s Monterey Car Week, is an excellent place to start.

Also, we know that the ZDX will be a model for 2024 and that it will go into total production this year or early in 2024. It will first use GM’s Ultium motor and battery technology, just like the Honda Prologue, which will come out around the same time and has the same kind of motor. Future electric Acuras will have a new global e: Architecture made in partnership with GM.

The first-generation ZDX had a wild look, but its weak engine was one of its most significant flaws. The ZDX brand will be kept this time if Acura can bring the physical drama of the last ZDX into the current decade while also giving the car a satisfying electric punch and the right amount of dynamic zest.

Acura has revealed that the ZDX will come with Google’s built-in wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto system for entertainment. Apple CarPlay will be standard on the ZDX but won’t be on future electric vehicles from General Motors. Starting with the Chevrolet Blazer in 2024, this technology will no longer be supported.

Along with CarPlay, Google has built-in features like Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store. Voice instructions are easy to use and come in many languages. Google Maps will help the ZDX plan its routes around public chargers and determine how long it will take to charge before it gets to its location. The battery will be ready when the SUV knows it’s going to a fast charger.

NACS vs. CCS

Acura and Honda, which owns Acura, have not said whether they will use the Tesla supercharging network in the future. However, the carmaker said it always looks for ways to improve the customer experience. Ford and General Motors have said they will use Tesla’s connection on their cars starting in 2025.

The satisfaction of our clients as owners of electric vehicles is our number one goal. As we get ready to launch our first BEV models for the mass market, we are looking into every option to ensure that users have a great time and access reliable public charging options.”
