At first, it was thought that the regular 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV work truck would cost $40,000. But high inflation is in charge, and car prices across the market are increasing. The first electric Silverado is scheduled to come out later this year and will be priced differently. The most significant change to the prices is that the base model’s price has increased to around $50,000. A Chevrolet press statement says, “Customers can buy the truck in different price ranges, with MSRPs starting at $50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000, and more.” The problem is made worse by the way the market is right now. All over the world, there has been a lot of inflation. When Chevrolet announced the $40,000 pickup in early 2022, the maths made sense. But now, it doesn’t. When it comes to the price of cars, 18 months is now a long time. The company has had to improve the numbers to keep the business case for the Silverado EV alive. Customers are unhappy, which is not surprising given the state of the market. As we’ve seen, the prices of other electric cars have increased significantly in recent months. When it first came out, the Ford F-150 Lightning cost about $20,000 less than it does now. Similarly, Rivian raised prices a lot last year, which upset many people who had pre-ordered. Nico DeMattia of The Drive used a 4WD Silverado EV as a base for his test drive. This high-end pickup had 510 horsepower and a range of 450 miles on a full charge. It cost $79,800. The 4WT will come out first, followed by the 3WT, which has a range of 350 miles. The new top-of-the-line model will be able to tow 10,000 pounds and make 664 horsepower. The Silverado EV might be something other than the cheap electric work truck we thought it would be. But based on how well it works now and how much promise it has, it is a good choice at a fair price. Once sales start in earnest, we’ll know more about how this price change will affect the market.
