If you are older, remember trying to choose a major in your senior year of high school or your first year of college. Some people only figure it out once they’ve done less than half their four-year sentence. Some people don’t have as much trouble, and we’re sure that McPherson College students who love repairing old cars are fine.

This college in McPherson, Kansas, is the only place in the country where you can get a bachelor’s degree in “restoration technology” in four years. Put to rest any worries you might have about a group of highly driven college students being able to do good work on repairing cars. At the 72nd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, McPherson College won the Postwar Luxury category. A 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Cabriolet was fully fixed with the help of restoration technology. Also, this is the first time that a car fixed up by students at Pebble Beach has been in the top three.

Even if you are not a student team, getting second place at the Concours is a big deal because only 200 cars are chosen each year out of thousands of entries.

A neighborhood businessman helped make the McPherson Automobile Restoration Technology Program happen in 1976. Jay Leno, who gives young people scholarships and job chances, is still a supporter. Imagine being a college student from Kansas and getting a summer job at Jay Leno’s famous garage. Writing a better story for a movie about growing up would be hard.

Students in the school learned how to work on cars from 1890 to 1973, emphasizing classic car from before and after World War II. Alumni of McPherson College say that Hagerty, RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Company, the Brumos Collection, and several private owners are all big names in the market for old cars. We wouldn’t be surprised if the Mecum auction sold any works by graduates.
