• Honda has announced that it will move CR-V production from Canada to the United States in an effort to mitigate the consequences of President Trump’s tariffs.
  • To make room for the CR-Vs built in Canada, Honda will need to expand production capacity at its factories in Indiana and Ohio.
  • Honda is postponing its planned $11 billion investment in new EV plants in Ontario, Canada, because demand isn’t as high as it was in North America.

The incredibly popular Honda CR-V small SUV is currently made in two places: the United States and Canada. However, because of the tariffs put in place by the Trump administration, Honda is moving all of its CR-V production to the United States. The car company’s CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, announced the news yesterday at a press conference.

Because Of Taxes, Honda Is Moving Production Of The CR-V From Canada To The US

He said that the reason for moving the CR-V factory from Canada to the US is to “minimize the impact of tariffs.” There will need to be more space at the CR-V factories in Greensburg, Indiana, and East Liberty, Ohio, where cars are made in the United States. Honda has also said that it wants to discontinue production of the five-door Civic in Yorii, Japan, and relocate production to Indiana by early summer. The Civic hatchback is manufactured alongside the CR-V at the Indiana factory. The CR-V is manufactured at the same Ohio facility as the Acura RDX and MDX.

During Monday’s news conference, Mibe also discussed how the disruptive tariffs might affect prices. Honda hasn’t raised the prices of its new cars yet, but Mibe said that the company will monitor its competitors’ actions to determine which models might need price changes.

Honda has stated that it is delaying plans to build new electric vehicle manufacturing facilities in Ontario, Canada, giving another blow to the Canadian automaker. This is another setback for the Canadian carmaker. The company revealed plans last year to invest more than $11 billion in its electric vehicle supply chain across North America. In Alliston, Ontario, a separate plant for making EV batteries was planned, and in 2028, another unit would start making EVs. Mibe said that Honda’s choice to put off its investment in Canada was because the EV business in North America is growing slowly.

Invoice Pricing asked a Honda representative about the news and got this response: “Right now, the Honda CR-V and CR-V Hybrid are made at the Indiana Auto Plant, Honda of Canada Mfg, and the East Liberty Plant in Ohio.” Honda is always looking for better ways to make cars so that it can meet the needs of customers and the market. There are no plans to cut down on Honda of Canada Mfg.’s total manufacturing volume or employment, even if the location of model production changes in the future.
