Because of a problem with the software for the cruise control, more than 11,000 BMW iX xDrive50 and iX M60 cars from the years 2022 to 2024 are being called back. Documents given to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) say that the driver could accidentally turn on the device by pressing the speed control button. BMW will begin contacting customers beginning on July 28. BMW of North America has called back about 11,180 iX xDrive50 and iX M60 electric SUVs because of a possible safety problem with the cruise control. BMW says that if you slowly turn the steering wheel, you might accidentally hit the button for the cruise control. Even though the cruise control light will be on and the driver can turn it off by stopping or pressing the on/off button, this problem could cause the car to change one’s speed suddenly and without warning. Separately, over 14,000 BMW EVs, including about 5000 iX SUVs and a few dozen 2022 iX EVs, were recalled earlier this year because of problems with the batteries. This could have led to trash getting inside the battery. In each case, BMW told the driver to stop driving until a recall could fix the problems. BMW will start telling car owners in July that their cars need a software update so that the problem can be fixed. In the meantime, owners of iX vehicles can check the NHTSA’s website for recalls to see if their car is affected.
