• To make the country’s network of E.V. charging stations bigger, the U.S. government has secured cash.
  • To encourage the building of more public charging stations in neighborhoods and along major roads, the Biden Administration stated today that it will give $623 million.
  • There will likely be 500,000 public charging outlets in the U.S. by 2030.

The United States has had a hard time getting people to buy electric cars (E.V.s) because charge stations have been slow to develop. But the federal government wants to make it easier to get by by spending more money. They want to reach their goal of having at least 500,000 public charging stations open by 2030. Today, the Biden government said that new chargers will be built in neighborhoods and along major roads with grants worth $623 million.

By 2030, America will have added 500K public chargers to its network for charging electric vehicles

New E.V. chargers on the way

A White House news release says that 47 E.V. charging and alternative fuel infrastructure projects will be built in 22 states and Puerto Rico with the $2.5 billion Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program. Reports say that the money is being used to build 7500 more charging points for electric vehicles. The Department of Energy says that there are over 140,000 public charging stations for electric vehicles in the United States. These stations make up more than 90% of all charging spots for electric vehicle.

About $311 million of the award money will be used to build hydrogen filling stations and E.V. There are charging stations located in both urban and rural sectors. Parks, schools, multifamily housing, and other publicly funded facilities will get the money first. The last $312 million will be used to make sure that big highways have enough E.V. chargers and alternative fuel stations. The White House statement says all of this and also says that projects in poor neighborhoods will get more than 70% of the award money.

The goal of the following government-funded projects is to raise the number of chargers for electric vehicles: New Jersey will get $10 million to put E.V. chargers near public transportation and multifamily housing. Maryland will get $15 million to put 87 E.V. chargers across the state and support workforce development programs. And Alaska’s Chilkoot Indian Association will get $1.4 million to put an E.V. charger in a poor rural community that doesn’t have access to them otherwise.

A hydrogen-fueling corridor linking Southern California will be built with $70 million from the federal government. Another $30 million will be used to build more Level 2 and Level 3 chargers in different parts of California and Washington. With an extra $12 million, 48 E.V. chargers will be built in Mesa, Arizona, making a wide range of electric cars easier to use.

As stated by the White House, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg: This funding will help ensure that E.V. chargers are accessible, reliable, and convenient for American drivers while also creating jobs in charger manufacturing, installation, and maintenance for American workers.
