When the Hellcat V8-powered Ram TRX died in 2023, it left the company’s lineup with a huge hole for a supertruck. There was something else coming, and Ram made it clear. Everyone knew it wouldn’t last long. The “something else” is the 2025 Ram 1500 RHO, a speed pickup with a lot of improvements that looks a lot like the TRX. Under the hood is a 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six engine that has been fine-tuned.

Let’s get right to it: the RHO has 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. Even though it doesn’t have as much power as the 702hp TRX, it still beats the Ford F-150 Raptor in every way. The Blue Oval’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine is larger than the Ram’s, but the two Garrett GT2054 turbos give it 26 pounds of boost, which is more than the makeup for it. It has a water-to-air intercooler, a faster-flowing oil pump than a normal Hurricane I6, and forged internals to handle the extra pressure.

Desert truck 2025 Ram 1500 RHO with twin-turbo I6 engine competes with Raptor

You might be worried about the switch. I’ve driven a Ram 1500 Tungsten with this engine, and it’s very quick. At any stop sign, a quick boost launch will get your tires chirping. I am sure they will still feel quick when driven off-road at high speeds. The engine is also quieter than the V6 in the Raptor. (I am sorry to say this, but it is unavoidable.)

A supertruck doesn’t have to go from 0 to 60 mph, but the RHO can do it in 4.6 seconds. It can go a quarter-mile at 105 mph in 13.1 seconds on a speed strip. Finally, the car can go as fast as 118 mph if there is enough space. Most people should be able to drive less quickly, especially in the desert where there are no things to run into (Ram?).

That being said, off-roading needs more than just horsepower. That’s not all of it. The suspension is, without a doubt, the most important part. Like the TRX, the Ram RHO has adjustable Bilstein Blackhawk e2 shocks. These have many valves that let you change the compression and rebound separately. They also record speed, throttle position, braking torque, steering angle, and other things all the time. Also, since the tanks are far away, there is more space for the suspension and piston rods to move. The truck’s Ram Active Terrain Management technology makes the suspension work best for driving on or off-road, based on the mode chosen.

Besides that, the rest of the gear is great. The F-150 Raptor has a lower control arm made of cast aluminum and a larger upper control arm made of steel. The Ram RHO, on the other hand, has forged aluminum upper and lower control arms. The back has a track bar, a five-link coil suspension, a Dana 60, and full-float axle shafts. The back has a locker, and the 18-inch wheels can beadlocked. The 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler AT tires give it a great grip.

All of this adds up to some really cool numbers. The front track is 74.4 inches wide, which is more than six inches wider than a regular Ram 1500 4×4. The back axle moves 14 inches, and the ground clearance is 11.8 inches. The most important thing to know is that those numbers are the same as the TRX. You may or may not care about those numbers. See? Good.

The exhaust on the RHO doesn’t sound as good as that of a boosted V8, but it does a lot of the same things as the TRX for a lot less money. The TRX’s price went up to $98,335 by the end of its production run. Most buyers paid that much for the truck when they drove it off the lot. The TRX cost the same as the RHO when it first came out in 2021: $71,990 after location. That being said, it starts at a lot less than the F-150 Raptor, which costs $80,325.

We’ll let you mourn the loss of the Hellcat V8 for as long as you need to, but for now, this is all we have. That is not a bad thing. Even though Ram seemed sure that the TRX would come back, albeit in a different form, I won’t be upset if the RHO is the only choice for now.
